Simple question - Should I or not? I am really tempted at the moment. would need to be my daily driver at circa 15k/annum in and out of city.

yes yes yes yes and yes.
V6 has one of the best sounds ever.
they're not too bad on fuel, look beautiful and are an experiance to drive every time you open the door.
if well maintained they are no problem (bar a few leccie issues-easily sorted) to run day in day out.
mines (non-cup) done 90,000 miles and feels as tight as new.
see www.sportsalfa.com for more details.

Love my car

Thanks

I am an avid Alfa fan since owning my 156 TS for the past 18 months. Was thinking of leaving the fold for cost/practicality reasons, but finding it very very hard to leave behind the lure of the Alfa V6.

well put it this way i can get 260 miles from £40 urban.
many of the common faults are annoying rather then expensive.
mine is serviced by a specialist who charges £460 for a cambelt.
cheers

I've used mine as a daily driver for 5 years.

I don't currently do anything like as much as 15k a year in it any more, basically because we have another car that's big enough for the family now its not just the 2 of us!

Look after it and it will look after you, just don't expect it to be super-cheap motoring.

With purely urban rush-hour driving, I struggle to get more than 18mpg out of it, but the short distances involved mean that's still only a once per month fill-up.

On the open road, economy is much better - mid to high 20's is achievable if you're not caning it.

See my profile for the entire history of the car if you're interested.

The only downsides are;

1- turning circle is terrible.

2- doors are easy to dent due to shape and the car is wide so can be a real pain to park.

3- It can be an a**hole magnet for people wanting to race in 30mph zones, uually in base Renaults, people carriers etc.

The cup version is pretty rare, you couldn't get them on import like the other models. The car is very stable up to its top speed off around 145mph (alfa exaggerate in the offical figures)

No they don't. I can attest to that

Although what you say is true....they are rare, this summer I have seen at least 6-8 for sale (most of which on PH). probably due to the age most of them are now. 5 years old. I just think it is a fabulous looking car.

I'm talking GPS figures, not what the speedo shows. Speedo 160mph = GPS 145mph.

How did you check yours?

I think I've only ever seen 2 on the road in that time.

How did you check yours?

Measured 142mph at an indicated 150-and-a-bit through an accurate laser trap (independently verified by GPS) at Bruntingthorpe - ran out of runway!

Have also seen an indicated 165+ in very similar conditions (speedo runs out of numbers at 160), which by my calculations is a true speed of 155 or thereabouts, as claimed by Alfa

As you get to the end of the speedo, things get even more inaccurate. Do you have the 3.2 or the 3.0(20bhp difference). Had a friend who had a old Rover, once he hit 85 mph, his speedo would continue upto 130mph, however, he still wasn't overtaking anybody(Guess he was really only doing 95 or so).

I'd be very surprised for a 3.0 to pass 150mph, GPS is all that matters, trying to extrapolate from a lower speed is too inaccurate. I still have my GTV by the way.

10mph is hardly a long way off to extrapolate from.

My accurate measurements @ 142 indicate that the speedo is over-reading by ~7% at that point.
I somehow doubt that over the next indicated 10-15mph the over-read will increase to nearer 14% as you're suggesting!

Will have to arrange for a GPS in the car next time I'm on a max speed run...
