Out in my car last night, GTV 2.0 TS, I gave it some beans in 2nd around a roundabout and up to 6k rpm. When I changed up it stuttered a bit and then as I turned in to a side road it started to misfire badly.

When I stopped I gave it a rev and it was very consistant as if one cylinder was not firing at all, but non of the dash lights have come on?

I have called PeakAlfa this morning but they can't fit it in until the end of next week

Has anybody had a similar experience? or got any advise they can give me?

Also does anyone know of any other good Alfa mechanics in the High Peak / Stockport area?

I've heard of misfires happening on TwinSparks because of oil being spilt when topping up the engine - it runs down into the recess around the plugs in No 1 cylinder. To get to them, you'll have to take off the engine cover, then take off the coil packs to expose the plugs.

Unfortunately I haven't topped up the oil since i got the car 3 weeks ago, I have been checking it though ;o)

I'll have a look at the plug area tomorrow morning to see if I can find any problems there, as I can't get in at a garage with diagnostic kit before Tuesday I need to try something.

Thanks for the advise.

Could be a dead coil pack. They can go without warning on any car.

is there an easy way to test the coil pack?

Check for a spark on each lead one at a time. No spark = dead coil.

I had misfire on a 166 TS was water in No1 plug recess, it gets in at the oil filler due to small gap around plastic engine cover.

I had a misfire on my 156 (v6). it was a coil pack, managed to work out it was on the rear bank so had to go to main dealer to fix (time factor was a problem for me to fix). So after removing plenum chamber etc and renewing coil pack and refitting bits was told "we have fixed it, but you sill have a misfire. So off it all came again only to find plug on same pack was also faulty (only 12,000 miles old). So new set of plugs fitted as well. Problem sorted, then came the bill !!!.
Coil pack- £ 59.51
Plugs x6, 18.66ea £111.96
Labour- £220.50
vat- £ 68.59
--------
total 460.56
Next time, find the time.

My wife's got a 1.8 156 T'spark and it had a slight missfire too. On taking the coils off, I noticed that there was a bit of oil round No. 1 plug. I also noticed that when I pulled the rubber extension shrouds off each of the 4 coil packs (the rigid ones that point downwards) the connectors inside two of them just disintegrated into greeen verdigris powder. Finally, the plastic bodies of three of the four coils were cracked. I ordered a set from a breaker and found that those were cracked too! In the end I araldited the cracks up and the car seems much better now.
