Just stumbled across a beautiful one for sale, completely by chance, for under £2k. Totally rust free! Never forgiven myself for selling my last one...but now have no space courtesy of a three car and two motorcycle stable. Lackaday forsoothe, what am I to do?!!

No one`s ever bought one of these with practicality , rational or common sense . You appear to have two options . 1, buy the car and widen your house door to allow access to hallway / porch or any other reception room within, or 2, inform me of the vendors details and I`ll buy it and tell you how good / infuriating it is on a regular basis .

Looking at your profile, just cut down the tree between the Land Rover and the shed. Problem solved.

At that price, if it's as good as you say, there's no good enough reason not to. thumbup

Tempted by one of these, how good are they by modern standards? In 'caned but able' in autocar they slated them for understeer??

Bluntly, they're not that good by modern standards, mainly because they're a thirty-year-old design.

The interior is either dated or retro, depending on how charitable you're feeling. The gearbox (transaxle, allegedly giving near 50:50 weight distribution) can by turns be stiff or vague or precise, often in the same journey.

But they go fairly well, sound magnificent, and handle pretty well if the suspension's not worn out.

Mine was the first rear-wheel-drive car I had (OK technically the second, but I don't count my Viva) and I would never have accused it of being understeery.

Buy one and try it, and sell it on if you don't like it. They're stupidly cheap at the moment, so you're not going to lose a lot of money. I wouldn't hesitate to have another one.

I decided not to buy it after seeing it - dreaded rust in the boot floor. Would really like another one though - they are very easy to tune, both in terms of chassis and engine, sound magnificent, handle very, very well and any that manage not to succumb to tin worm will, I think, be in great demand in years to come.

I do actually rather like the looks (inside and out of the GTV) so thats not a problem.

You reckon they're fairly good with reasonable dampers and bushes?

......quite neutral and throttle adjustable?
