When you say last legs.......is it disintegrating or is the battery just going?

Mines disintergrating, its help togeather with gaffer tape.

I have enquired about this with Alfa and they wanted £85 for a new coded key last year. They need your old one to get the coding right and it's Alfa only i'm afraid. Hence why mine is held togeather with gaffer tape!

You need to get the codes for the new key to be programmed. If you haven't got them, you can get them from a dealer for £15-20. They will need to see the V5. You can probably get a key off Ebay then you need to take the car, key and codes to someone with the Alfa Examiner "laptop" and they can match everything up. My local specialist did it for me as part of a service on my wife's 147 - I just paid to get the codes from Alfa as we already had a key.

If it's just th case that's falling apart buy a secondhand unit and swap the interior.

If the key itself is falling apart there's a guy called Chris who can repair them for about £22 (on ebay) iirc.

I want to get 2nd key really, thought I'd put this
one i have as a spare as it is missing the key ring
hook which is built into the unit.
