What do people think of this? Would you say that the price was right? I thought it was a little on the high side?

Its had a new engine 8k miles ago, as the woman owner ran over something in the road which damaged the engine, she carried on driving etc so the insurance replaced it.

My train of thought is that im looking to swap to a more fun car...and the criteria are as follows;

Sub £9k (the lower the better, im chopping in my 2003 E46 318Ci M Sport worth circa. £10k)
Real Wheel Drive lol.
Preferably a drop top, summer fun.
Nice looking, or interesting looking.
Not an MX5
Air con.

Basically a sporty, good fun car.

Also, obviously, what are Alfa's like to live with? I hear they are very unreliable?

Cheers

Alex

very much down to individual models - My bro had one and it was v reliable - a colleague had one and it was broken every other week. Know what you're looking at.

They look ok and go ok, but it's FWD, and the chassis is made of jelly in the convertible.

No substitute for experience - get out and drive a few different models.

I knew never to listen to the salesman.

He said it was RWD and fun to drive.

Thats that one out then!

It is if you drive it backwards everywhere....

The original Alfa spiders were rwd same as the original GTVs.

Could you get a Honda S2000 for that sort of money?

And that's how you miss out on a cracking drivers car.

If you want a real sports car you could get a nice VX220 (or S1 Elise) for that money.

But also a dodgy salesman by the sounds of things. I'd like to think the seller of a car like that knows a thing or two about it.

Do you really like the way the Spider drives? I test drove one before I got my Corrado and it felt awful to me. The GTV, on the other hand, is quite a nice handling car (although still not as good as a Corrado).

ETA: lovely engine though

They're reliable if looked after properly. Alfa's don't take neglect like Jap/German stuff.

My experience of German cars suggests that they take neglect extremely badly too. Japanese cars do just seem to keep going whatever you do to them though. I don't think there's much to choose between major European car manufacturers in terms of reliability any more.

Well, the older German stuff does.

Trouble with that generation of Alfa was the oil consumption/cambelt change schedules being neglected. Usually resulting in dead engines. Otherwise they're as good as anything else.

I love it when people who have never been close to an Alfa mention rust, FWD..etc...etc.

The GTV(late 90's) was one of the best, if not the best fwd handling cars out there. The 2.0TS was nice and revy, the 3.0V6 muscular but not stressed.

Full momo leather as standard, nice color interiors/exteriors, full elecs and looks that make cars 4 to 5 times the price look bland.

I only regret not keeping mine but family came first.

It's good but it's not that good. It's on a par with the Fiat Coupe but doesn't feel as planted as a Corrado or Integra Type-R and doesn't even get close to an M100 Elan. I haven't driven much else to compare it to but I suspect there are others which are better too. You can forgive it a lot for that engine though.

The spider, however, feels like they made the chassis out of cheese.

Agree completely. From the wide bodied 155 onwards they were terrific cars.

After all, Alfa produced one of the best handling fwd cars ever....the Alfasud....just don't mention the rust.

Yes, I do like it to drive. Having said that the GTV is better to drive, then again I don't think it's fair to compare a Corrado coupe to a Spider for obvious reasons.

Having said that, I like the GTV, Spider and Corrado. smile

The spider has funky rear suspension which makes it handle like a rwd car in many respects i.e. if you put the power on at the apex of the corner it turns in nicely a la rwd. Obviously if you boot it in the wet, it'll just understeer sideways so you can't powerslide it.

Take it out for a spin and see what you think - it ticks all of the other boxes you wanted.
