New to this forum so will try not to soudn too stupid.
I am in the market for a classic alfa spider (always wanted one but have been owning Porsches.........) and decide I'l take the plunge now.

Having done some basic research, S3 is definitely out for me. I'm torn between a S2 and S4. The former has a better shape (to me anyway) but obviously older. S4 (rationally) sounds like a better buy as it's newer, and some come with a hard top.

So would appreciate any comment regarding buying/living with any of them.

One last question (promise!): where is the best place to find one? I have looked at the usual sources but struggle to find a handful. And anybody does pre-purchase insepection, like a Peter Morgan type of service for Porsche (promise won't mention that name again!)

I've had my S4 for 5 years now. Toyed with getting an S2 first but ended up with the S4 as I wanted a daily driver. Used it as a daily for 3 years with no major problems over usual running costs.
S4's do rust!! Any you look at will be getting to an age where it will have set in by now so look carefully. They were all LHD and were converted mainly by 2 companies, Seaking and Bell & Colvill. Depending on who they farmed out the conversion to will determine how good dash fit and electrics are. I don't think there is much way of telling whether the electrics are ok, its just one of those risks. Mine had bad electrics but I think I've almost sorted it all!
Scuttle shake is the first thing you notice. It improves with handling kits.
They are fantastic cars, great fun, beautiful, easy to maintain, very good support network of parts and clubs etc.
I reckon prices for S4's are quite low at the mo and should be at a turning point.

Many thanks. And what is a "handling kit", does it essentially firm up the torsional flex and how much would it cost?

Handling kit does not alter the structural rigidity of the shell at all but does give much better controlled suspension movements!!

I went for cheapish stiffer lower springs and poly bushes. Parts were about £200 from memory. It does give a tighter feel as the back end can be a bit floaty. It is nice to play around with RWD and a light rear end, easy to push out and drift, unlike the porsche though it doesn't flick right round and put you in the verge.....or is that just my poor control wink
