Having owned a fiat coupe 20v turbo, and experienced an almost constant list of faults (both mechanical and electrical), should I consider the GTV as a similar money pit? I'm considering getting hold of one (a V6), and although the problems wouldn't necessarily put me off, I'd like to go into it with my eyes open.

V6 checks

Rear bushes
Oil Cooler
Engine Mount
Cambelt (72k or 5 years)
Clutch
Radiator
Exhaust
Inner tyre wear
Master key present

There are lots of rough ones out there which haven't had the required maintenance. If you find one with the work done, then your on a winner - they are fantastic cars.

Be careful

I have had mine(2001 V6 lusso 95k miles) for about 18 months, in that time it has had,

Poly bushed rear suspension,
New Bilstein Sport shocks,
New st/st Raggazon exhaust from the cat back, unsilenced rear section, silenced front section,
Both electric window mechanisms replaced,
New air flow meter.

It now handles superbly, sounds superb and I love it, so I would say go for it but try to get one that has a lot of the above upgrades done.
