I am planning on buying a Spider. Never owned an Alfa before. It will be a 2001 + V6 with about 40-50,000 miles on it. I just wanted to ask, what to expect from a servicing point of view. And are there any major faults to watch out for? I have read that they are sound from an engine point of view. Thanks for any advice.
Some good reading here... http://www.alfaworkshop.co.uk/alfa_romeo_spider.sh...
Couple of websites for you to have a look at:
www.alfaowner.com
www.sportsalfa.com
both have buying guides.
The main thing with the v6 is service history and noisy rear suspension. V6 suspension is better than twin spark, but still has a habit of eating rose joints. The engine is pretty bombproof if it's been looked after. Check the hood motor works properly (v expensive, and one reason I went for a manual hood). Look for excessive tyre wear on the insides of the front wheels. Check everything electric!! Air con included. Check windows don't pinch hoods. You'll also need all 3 keys (2 red plus the brown master one to reset everything when something electricky goes wrong. Brakes are not brilliant - it's a long pedal, so expect that when you drive it.
Enjoy!
