A freind of mone has a very nice 2005/54 Alfa 156 2.0 JTS and has now covered 59,000 miles. We both know the oil consumption can be high on alfas but his is using about 1 pint of oil to 2 tanks of fuel. His average milage is about 20 to 25k a year and most of this is on the motorways. Is this kind of consumption normal, should he be worried and is there any thing he can do to improve this?

Thanks

Matt

I think about a half litre of oil per 1000 miles is acceptable. Sounds like this one is burning a bit, but at least he's keeping it topped up! a pint is only half a litre, and two tanks of fuel would be about 700 miles.

Mine is about a half litre every 1500 miles, but it's recently reconned bottom half so shouldn't be too bad.

Gloopiness of oil is a factor too - I think the semi synthetic doesn't last as long as fully synth.

They can potentially use up to 1 litre every 1000 miles!

If it's a JTS, make sure he's using the correct oil - I think Alfa upped the spec to 10/60 fully synthetic and not the 10/40 semi as on the earlier 2.0 TS.

My wife's (52 plate) 2.0 JTS handbook helpfully says max acceptable oil consumption 400 grammes per 1000km. Assuming the density isabout 0.78, that works out at about 312ml per 1000km or about half a pint per 600 miles.

Her old 1.8 TS handbook quoted 1 litre per 1000km!
