Not too cheap to run - insurance and fuel costs are moderate to high (V6 that is). Parts are reasonably cheap, and repairs can be DIY or done using an independent.
It might be worth asking over at http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-gtv-and-916-sp...

If they're looked after, they are reliable. Twin Sparks need a cambelt every 36k. Diesel noise on start up will be the variator failing. It doesn't do any damage but to change it requires a cambelt etc....
The major problem is they use oil and not everyone tops them up as often as they should do and bottom end failiure isn't that uncommon as a consequence.

I had a 156 1.8ts for 18 months, cracking car and was reliable.
Then bought a 2.0 GTV lusso love the style but....it what so good, bought a 52 plate and planned on keep it for a while, had it 4 months, and this it what happened,
In 4 months this is what happened
big end went; £1000 for new engine.
central locking was tempramental
wouldnt start every 1 in 3ish times, down to imobilisor, dealer couldnt fix it
leeked like a sive, dealer couldnt fix it £50
had to be plugged into computer at alfa 3 times £150
Syncro went on 5th gear
Lambdas went £300
new door seal £180 from alfa, but got a used one
eat tyres even after 4 wheel alignment
hazards used to flash randomly, which was annoying and makes you look stupid
burned oil like mad, before and after recon engine was fitted
wipers were crap
it had a even full alfa history and 2 previous lady owners, the lady cried when i bought it, think they were tears of relif
Had 4 alfas before, never again at least not another GTV
+1 Cambelts are to be changed at 36k, it was recommended at first to change them at 72k but after large numbers of them failed they issued a press release stating to change them at 36k

Sounds like you got a "Friday Afternoon" car.
Oh, and a SH from a specialist is far preferable to an Alfa history.
And... "2 lady owners"? These cars need to be driven. If (and I highlight the "if" because I know nothing about the 2 previous owners) they've just pootled around town in it, I doubt it was in the rudest of health...

Sure people have said before, but everyone knows the TS likes a little oil tipple. (So do S2000's, RX8's e.t.c) So ignoring the oil for a year, driving it for the same period then taking it to an Alfa dealer for the stamp really doesn't count and accounts for the big end going. Then bought a 2.0 GTV lusso love the style but....it what so good, bought a 52 plate and planned on keep it for a while, had it 4 months, and this it what happened,

I kept a little can of Selenia 10w60 in my 2.0 JTS and checked it every week, (same with my friend who owned an S2000)
Immobiliser/Hazards - agreed, poor but also never heard of these issues before on other GTV's
Door seals always silly expensive from dealer, wise move to get second hand. Possibly removed in past, poorly refitted and caused whatever problems you had?
4 wheel alignment - set up incorrectly, it won't eat tyres if aligned correctly.
5th gear synchro - never heard of any synchro problems before on these, again signs of an abused car. Just because it's had lady owners, doesn't mean it wasn't driven hard or the kids insured as second drivers

Unfortunately does sound like you bought a lemon
, but do remember this cars need a little care and attention, not like say MX5's which never seem to die.Edited by V6Alfisti on Wednesday 24th December 20:30
Had a 2001 2.0TS Lusso, cracking car. Had an issue with the indicator stalk that wouldn't click in one direction (indicators worked though) and an engine light that turned out to be some sort of sensor. Car ran fine though and was a lot of fun. I used it every day for work and it never let me down.
A cheap GTV may turn into an expensive care though, but if you can buy a good one for that price then great.
