Info on GT coupes'
Discussion
hi i have just sold a Golf R32 and now looking for another car but i can't decide what. i have had VW's for all my driving years and i'm now thinking of straying into the world of alfa's. i could quite fancy a GT coupe. is there any problems i should look out for on these? and also what is the engine to go for diesel or 3.2 petrol?
Hi Stu, i've had the 3.2 & the diesel, & as much as that 3.2 engine is a dream, i would have to say the 1.9 diesel is the one to go for, IMHO
It's torquey, economic & yet fun to drive. It's not that much slower in the real world & is not as front heavy or torque steery, especially the Q2, which is just awesome!
Best bet though, go drive both.

Can you not get the 2.4 in the gt? More comparable to the 3.2 petrol surely.

I have owned a 3.0 V6 GTV and a couple of 156's and a GT 1.9 JTD.
I personally would have a 3.2 V6 GTV for the following reasons :-
The V6 is for the petrol heads, it revs harder, feels miles quicker and it sounds amazing and whilst the 1.9 JTD is a competent engine, its rev limit is quite low (in comparison to a 2.4 JTD I owned), it sounds gruff at idle and it ran out of steam relatively quickly from my experience.
The main benefit of the 1.9 JTD however, is it's ability to avoid understeer, due to the lower weight of the 1.9 JTD unit, compared to the 3.2 V6.
I would however take the V6 each and every time (and be inclined to buy the Q2 version), or have the Q2 diff retro fitted.

Coming from an R32 you obviously appreciate V6 glory. Buy the V6 - it is only £500 to have the Q2 retrofitted and the V6 is endlessly better than the 1.9 in my opinion - why have a diesel when you can have a 3.2 V6?
I really can't understand them not using the 2.4 jtd though that is a stonking engine especially after a remap.

Does the new 2.4 fit in the old chassis? I've no idea, but the 2.4 that went in the 156 (so would likely fit the GT) was only 175bhp, so not much advantage over the 170bhp 1.9.The 2.4 does fit as Alfa have (bizarrely!) raced 2.4 JTD 147s at the Nurburgring 24 hours!
To the original poster - there is a beautiful 1.9JTD GT for sale through the owners club at the moment. I can put you in touch with the seller if you are interested. It's got all the bits including Q2 and Bilsteins.

Was that the new one, the 200bhp/210bhp from your car? Or is the 200/210bhp basically the same engine as the old 175bhp one?I'm pretty sure a 147, 156 and GT will all have the same lack of space under the bonnet.
