The better half's 156 had a wee accumulation of 'mayonnaise' under the oil filler cap.

Could be down to generally short-ish runs (house to her work is only about 6 miles each way) but was worried it was head gasket related. Thing that makes me think it maybe isn't is that the coolant level hasn't moved.

Any clues?

Not that prone to HGF, I suspect it's cold weather & short runs, especially if the coolant is OK.

hopefully. I'll see how it goes after a long run.

Not prone. As above it's probably not getting warmed up.

I had that breifly on my 2.0 TS which scared the crap out of me at first. But, the coolant level never moved and it's gone away. Short runs in the recently cold weather wont have helped. Incidently, I seem to have the only twin spark that doesn't use oil. I've given it a token dribble of oil twice in 10000 miles to make me feel better.

Ours uses pretty tiny amounts of oil too.

I gave the car a good roast this past weekend, water temp fully up, ran it hard, let it idle for about 10mins after that (fan on and off a few times). Will see if that's made a difference.
