I'm back in the alfa fold!
Discussion
On Friday I picked up my new car. It's an Alfa 159 1.9 JTDm, Lusso in Alfa silver. Not the exact spec I would have chosen as a factory order, but it's 2 years old and done 30k and it was an absolute bargain. I would have posted about this before but been too busy
I've owned an Alfa before, some 3 years ago, a 156 veloce 2.0TS in red, but since then I've driven a few fords (the 1st an st focus, the 2nd a TDCI focus) and I have to say what a fantastic car the 159 is. The smoothness of the JTDm engine is phenominal and the ride comfort; especially on the motorways is amazing. The great thing about it though, is it can go from motorway cruiser to sporty saloon in the blink of an eye and never fails to put a smile on your face every time you take it out. I have to say I'm on
at the moment.
Just need another excuse to drive somewhere now..........I feel a meeting coming on.
I've been desperate to get back in an Alfa since getting rid of the 156 3 years ago and if there is anyone reading this contemplating buying one, all I can say is do it. You won't regret it.

I think the 2.4 is a great engine - especially the noise and power. The downsides are it is heavy and in it's current form not as economical as it used to be. The 1.9 is a good engine - light, flexible and with a good power delivery. However at Geneva they launched the new 2.0 so if you are buying new it might be worth hanging on for that.

Hi - I'm hooked on getting a 159 JTDM! Anyone got an opinion on the 2.4 over the 1.9??
In the run up to buying mine I obviously drove both engines on a number of occasions. In my opinion the 1.9 is a smoother engine than the 2.4. The power seems to be delivered over a wider range, whereas the 2.4 seems to have more of a traditional diesel power delivery. i.e huge torque for a second of two, then nothing until you change gear. As a result the 1.9 behaves more like a petrol. Don't get me wrong, neither are a match for a 6 cylinder petrol engine, but as I had opted for Diesel for economy etc the 1.9 had to be my choice. Also, the fuel consumption of the 2.4 is diabolocal for a modern day diesel engine, especially when you compare it to the 320d which performance wise is it's closest match.
Very much looking forward to drivng the 2.0 diesel though.
