2.4 JTD or 2.5 V6
Discussion
Hi Guys
Looking for some advice please. I have just sold my TVR Tuscan as I had a baby in January and now need something that I can fit all of the baby stuff in!
I have always loved the Alfa 156 estate and am tryng to toss up between the 2.4 JTD and the 2.5 V6. I like the idea of the petrol as I only do around 8,000 miles a year but I've heard that the diesel is a better drive?? Insurance has come out the same and they seen to be priced similarly too. Can anyone shed any light on which is best and what to look for in terms of buying? I am probably looking at 02/03 plates with between 40 and 80k in the clock.
Thanks
Eve

Congrats on the new arrival! I had a 2.4JTD Sportwagon as my family car and I really enjoyed it. Just check you are happy with the space in it before you start. It was fine for us, but it's not a Volvo!
As for the engines it's really a personal choice. Either will give you a very desirable and stylish car. Real life performance is very similar. The 2.4 is grunty, lag free and drives like a big capacity n/a engine. It also sounds pretty good too. You'll get mid 30s to mid 40s mpg and under £200 road tax. The V6 is of course an absolute gem but needs working quite hard to deliver it's performance - what torque it has is delivered high up the rev range. It obviously sounds brilliant but you'll get low 20s mpg at best and £400 road tax.
More importantly I would worry about the spec level - in my opinion the Lusso suspension can't cope with the weight of either of these engines and I would make sure you get a Veloce model. Ideally try and get a mid-2002 on car as this was the minor facelift which brought a smarter (silver) dash, colour coded bumpers and mirrors and numerous other tidied up bits.

I'm going to need to try one of the 2.4JTD engines one day, only driven a 1.9 GT before.......I know I'll be going back to a smaller engined alfa one day and the diesels are appealing!
Regards to V6 fuel consumption and tax, will it not still be around £200 for a couple of years yet, and I can get 26mpg with mixed driving so surely the 2.5 will be a bit better???

Sorry, yes you are right. The £400 tax is only on newer cars isn't it?I think if you are getting 26mpg you are doing very well.

If you can find a 2.4 20v, they're a fantastic engine. I consistently average the claimed 42mpg - sometimes a bit less if I use most of a tank in London, more if it's mostly motorway. Sounds good, huge torque when you want it (comfortably more than a GTA even), revs well to 4.5k.
The V6 sounds better, slightly faster if you use all the revs, probably cheaper but they are pretty thirsty. Cheaper to buy though, and if your mileage is low it might take a long time to make up the difference with fuel prices as they are.

Had the V6 and had a tussle with a remapped 2.4 jtd. Could not get away from him, and he was probable getting 40+MPG!
Once your used to the noise of the V6 (it does happen!) the 20 odd MPG you get for 190bhp/170lb is a bit of a bummer. I would recommend the JTD. Lots of power/torque, 5 cyl warble and decent mpg. If you want a v6 then i think you should save up a bit and go for a GTA. Come down in price alot and you get proper performance for your 20MPG.
Don't get me wrong i loved my 2.5, but the JTD is such a good engine.
