ALFA 159 1.9 TI (What's your thought's people???)
Discussion
Been on the lookout for a new moter for a few month's now with out any thing really standing out! Had the usual bland low spec bmw 3 series and audi A4's put in front of me,to be far i was getting sick of looking!!
I've always wanted a Alfa but been put of buy scare stories and bad press, but when i saw this little baby on the forcort i was smitted what a beautifull looking car,58 reg silver with black leather!! And was really suprised on the quality and build of cabin.
I know from here you will probly go on about the 2.4 but the missus has got to drive it most the time and her foots not as heavy as mine so i'm not that fussed.
if you could give me some thoughts on 159 and anything i should look out for would be very greatfull thanks.........

The 2.4 is indeed a real corker (in the Brera at least, haven't tried a 159), but seems to have a few issues with fuel economy not stacking up to Alfa's claims, the forum in the 2nd link has a big thread about this in the 159 section.

I've had a 1.9d ti Sportwagon since last August, pretty happy with it.
I think the 1.9d is powerful enough, but only just. I guess it depends what you're used to. It's perfect for motorway cruising, quiet and comfortable for long journeys.
I've had no real problems with mine - the fuel economy isn't great but a lot of my journeys are short (really short - 2 or 3 miles to the beach with the dog)
Another common complaint has been front tyre wear, although since Alfa revised the default geometry settings this doesn't seem to be as big an issue. My '08 car doesn't seem to be wearing any quicker than I'd expect.
It's been said already, but the Alfa reliability thing is really a myth nowadays - you still get the odd lemon, same as with any make of car, but generally it's the 'experts' who have never owned an Alfa that seem to have more experience of their unreliability than owners.

Just enjoy it and don't worry what Mr & Mrs Bland have to say about it.
The 2.4 is a great engine, but it's thirsty and heavy so the 1.9 has a lot going for it.
Enjoy!
The solution to both the economy and performance issue is very simple. Get the 1.9 get it chipped, remapped whatever you wish to call it. The 2.4 is a great engine, but it's thirsty and heavy so the 1.9 has a lot going for it.
Enjoy!
Improves economy and performance without any of the 2.4 associated issues.

Engine tastes are quite personal. I didn't like the 2.4 much, thought it was great for playing the boy racer but when taking my mum places I found it hard work to drive smoothly.
I don't get many rust bucket comments these days, but if I do I tell people they are confusing my car with a Mercedes
Not seen the spec, but I presume the 159 is fully galvanised? They made a big fuss of it with the 164 a long time back, I presume that is just standard these days.

Corrosion stopped being an issue 28 years ago but try telling the public....
I'm driving a 159Ti at the moment and love the comfort and accurate handling.
