Alfa 147 2.0 selespeed - whats peoples thoughts??
Discussion
Got an opportunity to purchase a 2001 147 2.0 selespeed. Now having never owned an Alfa and only heard bad things especially the selespeed i was wondering what the owners either past or present really think of them??
the car in question has had a replacement engine, and i quote from his ad
"recently had a recon engine fitted by Ital Auto's (UK's leading independant Alfa specialist) total bills from Ital in excess of £2000. work included clutch, MAF, Plugs, engine and fitting, drop link, alterntor, ECU, Aux belt pully... and more!!!"
Is this common?? are they the same kinda size as a golf, thinking of kids in the back and boot space. sorry for all the questions but would like to hear some real views. cheers guys in advance

Probably a bit smaller than a Golf, but still a handy size. Previous owner probably ran out of oil or cambelt life and lunched the engine. Selespeed is fine when it's working and most issues are known now, but in my opinion only go for it if it's mega cheap as any Selespeed problems may be expensive to sort and you may have trouble shifting it on.
With all that stuff changed, whats the worst that could happen?
Lots a selespeed bargains going around, the cars tend to have the best specs going, generally lower miles as well as they're not really used as lease cars and thus also have lots of extras.
Get it for as less as possible. Max £2500 but aim for £2000 if its a 2001-2002.
The seles tends to be cheaper despite its spec. I was going to get one but managed to find a 1.9JTD at the same price. Faster and cheaper to run as well as less trouble!

Sounds like everything that can be done to the engine has been done, so no problems there. Are you able to check the history of this car for any past issues with the Selespeed?
Selespeed is basically a manual box with an automatic clutch/gearchange mechanism. As the others have said, when they're working fine they're great but if you run into problems they can cost ££££'s to put right.
The 147 comes in 3-door and 5-door shapes. The 3 door is generally considered more desirable looks-wise but the 5-door is more practial if you have little-uns to squeeze into the back. Boot space comparable to a Golf. The 2.0 twinspark engine is also one of the nicest 4-pots you'll every hear and eager to rev
