The gear change on my 2.0 JTS is baulking on the shift plane between third and fourth, occasionally sticking in fourth.

It isn't a syncromesh problem and feels like the bushes or gear lever mechanism: is this a common problem and an easy fix?

Other than routine servicing and the replacement of the suspension wishbones, this is the first problem in 120k miles so I can't complain.

It is one of two things:

1. Linkage is sticking, easy to fix

2. Swarf is getting lodged in gap at the end of the selector rod. This can be cleaned out by removing the n/s/f wheel, take off the inner wheelarch inspection cover and front undertray (you'll need a drip tray inderneath), remove the endplate of the gearbox, and you'll see the little blighter. clean out the bits of metal, file down any spurs, and it'll be tickerty boo for the next 30-50,000 miles, and you can then do it all over again. It's about a 2hr job for a novice.
