156 2.4 jtd- Crankshaft pulley problem
Discussion
Hi, I have benn told I ned to replace this pulley and I was starting to get a squeeking noise mostly only on start up. In the last week te noise has become worse and has now started to make a metalic banging noise!
I am waiting for quotes for this to be done (and have stopped driving it just in case) can some one tell me if this is a common problem, also I will put a new auxillary belt on at the same time, but one garage has sugessted a new cambelt too. Is this nescesary? Would anyone know how much I should expect to pay for the whole job? Unfortunatly I worry I would end up getting fleced as I don't know too much about it and I am a girl.
Many Thanks

Yes, it's a fairly common problem. The crankshaft pulley has a rubber damper which cracks and allows the two parts to contact, making the noise you've got.
Price is something like £100 iirc, plus fitting....which is a dead easy job, less than an hour anyway (five or six bolts and it's off)! So don't get fleeced...as for the timing belt, is it due? When was it last replaced?
If it's not due (72k/6yrs or some prefer 60k) then don't bother as it doesn't have to be touched to replace the crank pulley.
