One option for a daily hack is a reasonably low mile Alfa 146 1.6 Junior. What goes wrong with them? Thanks.

Check when cambelt and tensioners were done - needs to be every 3 years or 36,000 miles. Check it has some oil in it as they sup a bit and have very small sumps. Front suspension bushes are crap so it may clonk over bumps. Have a good poke about underneath for rust. Great fun cars, but some are getting on a bit now. 2.0Ti won't really cost you much more to run....
