I want an Alfa GT..... so 1.9JTD or 2.0JTS???
Discussion
Ok all,
My original plan was to get a Holden Manaro, and that didnt work out, which is prob for the best.
Now im after a GT.
Ive been looking at either a 1.9JTD or 2.0JTS.
Ive been driving diesel saloons for the last few years, current motor a honda accord (dont ask) and now i want somthing fun and sporty but looks the mutts nuts.
This is mind, ive been leaning towards the 2.0JTS, but there doesnt seems to be many out there at the moment, but the place is awash with 1.9JTD adverts.
Ive been reading a few threads
http://pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f...
http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-147-156-and-gt...
Now the only issue is ive moved to ireland recently, and there isnt many Alfa/Fiat showrooms about, plus there arnt much in the way of alfa specialists about.
With all this factored in, which would be best between the diesel and petrol (no V6 unfortunatly
)
Cheers

The JTS isn't one of Alfa's greats so I would go for the 1.9JTD. It's probably faster in real life, it is genuinely economical, reliable and will still put a smile on your face. If you get one which has recently had it's cambelt done check to see if the waterpump was changed too as they can seize.
Whats the handeling and the engine noise like in the 1.9JTD. Im kinda sick of the clatter of a diesel engine of my last few cars, which is a reason why i was leaning to the JTS.
Is it an expensive job to get the cambelt and waterpump replaced. Ive read stories about the waterpump seizing, which is why the JTS was looking better for me.

Having had a 1.9 GT diesel and a 2.0 JTS 156, I would personally go for the 156 for the revs/sound. (Assuming you are happy with the fuel economy).
The handling of the 1.9 GT diesel is fantastic, it really is. I think most people say that it's the best handing GT to the weight of the engine. However I did get a little agitated with the short 1st/2nd gear (considering it revs to around 4-4.5k). The 2.0 JTS is obviously more very but less frugal.
The 1.9 is also a bit clattery unlike its bigger 2.4 brother.
Basically:
1.9 JTD - Economy, handling, longer cambelt interval
2.0 JTS - Noise, Revs
Cambelts are around £300 for a change (including tensioners)from a specialist, with the 2.0 JTS sometimes needing a variator and the JTD needing the waterpump.

Well i was looking for the 2.4JTD but the GT doesnt seem to come with that engine.
i found http://www.carzone.ie/search/Alfa-Romeo/GT/1.9-JTD... and am quite tempted.

That's right, the GT doesn't come with the larger engine.i found http://www.carzone.ie/search/Alfa-Romeo/GT/1.9-JTD... and am quite tempted.
Lovely looking car!, not often they come in that colour combo with those wheels.
Go on a test drive

down side is i have nearly a 3hr drive to get to the dealer. ugh.I test drove a 1.9JTD after testing a 3.2 and I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of the diesel.
It also impressed me with its reviness (?) but then I was comparing it with the 8 valve version in a Stilo.
I imagine the 2.0JTS might be a bit frustrating, especially if you're used to the torque of a diesel.

Well i do like the torque in a diesel, so the 1.9JTD sounds like the better option. The only thing that was really putting me off the diesel is the sounds at idle, but i suppose its better then the mondeo i use to own, that sounded like a tractor. It also impressed me with its reviness (?) but then I was comparing it with the 8 valve version in a Stilo.

That is a great looking example in that link, but the wheels must be replicas I think......because thats a Brera / 159 style that wouldn't normally fit on a GT???
I've only ever driven a JTD and never a JTS, so cant comment really but either of those engine will be options for me too when i'm changeing from the V6.

How often though do you sit at idle with the window down?Unless you commute into a big city I'd suspect it's not very often.
The only way to be sure is to get out there and test some.
Yup i wanna test them asap, but not many near me to try. My friend just got a 1.8 GT, so im taking it tomorrow for some "Background Research".

The 1.9 seems to be the no1 choice, in this thread anyway. Ill see if I can get my hands on a 1.9JTD in the next few weeks for a test.I've only ever driven a JTD and never a JTS, so cant comment really but either of those engine will be options for me too when i'm changeing from the V6.

Nearly sure that wheels like that were an option on non-UK cars?I think Ireland, like mainland Europe, gets a load of different trim levels that we don't.
Hey, they're getting better!
It was quite nice bringing the other halfs Punto to work today mind you, with soft suspension and light clutch.
Yeah I wanted a GTA with teledials when I was looking, and no silly sat nav and just plain black leather..... but now I'm quite liking the fact I have one with multi spokes, sat nav+ and the part tan leather.
