About the same really. Same engine!
GTV rear suspension is quite complex, but the GT's is hardly simple.
I would choose it more on which car better suits your needs. GT far more practical, GTV marginally better to drive and more "special". Debatable looks with the big nose facelift though I think...
Can you get a decent GT JTS for £5,000?

You might get a 04 High Mileage GT for 5,000? If you can find one??? Most of the high milers tend to be the diesels though.
I would go for the GTV personally, But if Insurance is an issue (Not sure if it is with yourself?) You will find the premium quite high when compared to that of the GT. Both are lovely cars. I would try to drive both and see which you like the most.

I'd say GTV
I had mine over 10 years and loved it for the duration - smiled every time I walked back to it in a car park. Personnally I don't find the GT any where near as pretty. (as has been said though: phase 2 car looks better than the late ones with the big grille)
Having said that, plenty of people swear by them and they are probably more practical than the GTV - packing for a 2 week tour of France requires 'creative' use of space (and leaving the spare wheel behind!)
