Integrale Evo1 or Evo2 ?
Discussion
For comparison sake both cars are as manufactured ie not modified and in the same condition with similiar mileage.
Is the Evo 2 worth the extra money over an Evo 1?
On paper there does not appear to be much in performance but is the real world difference worth paying the extra for?
What about reliability is the Evo 1 easier to maintain in tip top condition or is there little in it?
Which one do you think will maintain or increase its value over the long term?
I would be interested in hearing the views of current and past owners of unmolested cars.
Short answer is Evo 2 is not worth the extra money. The differences are negligible and largely cosmetic, though they are nice to have(especially the seats). I suspect the last cars were better built so you might find the build quality a bit tighter 15 years on when compared side by side, but then each car is unique anyway and will depend on how well they've been treated over the years.
Evo 1 will feel laggier and more old school. Evo 2 performance more usable on the road. However many cars are upgraded with modern turbos nowadays, so it's largely an irrelevant comparison.
Evo 1 is a proper homologated car: the 2s came out when Lancia stopped rallying so you could argue they don't have the same provenance, but that's a little harsh as the cars are essentially the same.
Personally, the look of the Evo 2 (inside and out) made me plump for a 2 instead of a 1, but if I had a 1 I would have a few grand in my back pocket to go mad on upgrades, and blow those pesky Misubishis away.

I was looking at Evo 1's originally and many will tell you these are the last of the proper integrales as the Evo 2 was produced after Lancia had quit rallying and so no Evo 2 ever competed.
However if you are after a "keeper" and intend to buy a good unmodified car and keep it that way I would opt for the Evo 2. They do tend to be better screwed together as they were built in a different factory in lower volumes. .
In the long run, what you pay extra you should always get back if you sell.
Get any of them and enjoy!

My bias is to EVO1 as that is what I have. Never compared build quality to EVO2 so can't comment but mine is pretty nicely screwed together and holding up well (it is a good example though...that bias again...)
Either way, buy one. EVO 1 does have that provenance though !
Just taken mine out for blast...phew, never fails to make me smile.
