Right, just after a few pointers please. We've got another kiddie on the way, so need to get a 4 door... Browsing the classifieds which has turned up an '04 156 Lusso JTS in black with red leather. Luckily, it's the only car the missus has said she's interested in!

Ideally, trying to find a pdf brochure with specs and interior shots, as have no idea of the Alfa badge/spec levels Plus, as we'll have 2 small kids, I'm being asked about the practicality of the boot size paperbag...

Have found various stuff about what to look for already (belt changes, suspension bushes and arms etc). Only other pratical question - is the leather likely to get trashed with family use, or is it pretty hard wearing? My works car will do the heavy stuff, so not too concerned but may aswell ask.

Thanks in advance!

The leather is very hard wearing and practical - much more so than cloth for young kids!
Boot size is useful rather than massive and the back seats do NOT fold.
Lusso is "Luxury" and gives you slightly soft suspension - good for comfort, but not the sharpest B road blaster. Hopefully you can read this, taken with a phone so not the best, but you are looking at the end column, Black blobs are standard equipment.

Thanks - that's a good starter, at least I now understand how the model range fits together!

Just a thought if you are looking for practicality and the lack of a folding seat in a 156 is a problem, you should consider the Sportwagon it's just as nice looking, drives just as well and is more practical without being too 'Estatey'.
Spec's are broadly similar, I'd recommend a Veloce over the lusso or Turismo thoughsmile

Sport wagon caught my eye, it's just a case of what we've been able to find locally.

Went and took a look this evening. Wife seemed to quite like the car, certainly looks the part. Seller let her take it out on roadtest on her own whilst we went to look at his Ford Thunderbird in the garage! Advertised as mint, but a few things need attention - there's a coolant leak which hadn't been spotted, and the front discs are heavily lipped so will need replacing soon.

So think we're gonna have a sleep on it and see what we think in the morning. One obvious problem is not so much the boot size, but more the size of the opening. Also have contacts with an Alfa dealer, so will ask them to look into warranty/recall history on car. Already found the instrument panel replaced at 16k (under warranty so all correctly stamped up in service book).

Anyway, the seller had a good lagh about the boot space being of importance to anyone buying an Alfa!

You can argue all you like but you know very well that a lipstick red 2.4 Veloce Sportwagon is the only way forward.

Sounds good. What on earth are you trying to fit in the boot?

I have a 156 and one small kid with a second on the way. I don't reckon the boot will be too small for us and have no absolutley intention of getting a bigger car. From my cold dead hands etc...

If you have one of those massive "travel systems" you may struggle a for space a bit, but we just have a smallish Maclaren Techno so it's absolutely fine.

The leather is a bonus too - wipe clean...

Sportwagon is plenty big enough. That's a Phil&Teds with the second seat. Heaps of room for everything/anything. Your taking too much if you can't get it all in.

Love my sportwagon.. brought it home to Aust.

This could be 'the money shot' as they say - other half is concerned can we get pram / travel cot / kitchen sink in etc. That's the other thing we're shopping for on e-bay - shame your not selling the whole lot, it would solve all our problems in 1 go!!!

This is what we originally saw http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am... , like the styling of the facelift model, black car with red leather in particular. 4 - 5k tops is our budget. Have been looking round for an SW equivalent. Only one I've found so far is a 1.8 TS with cloth trim. Just about to check PH classifieds now...

Don't take that sheet as gospel, as the facelift ones seemed to deviate from that a lot. Either that or mine (and a few others I've seen) were cobbled together at the factory!

Mine was a Veloce but had the electric sports leather seats (the ones that the Ti gets) which isn't an option on that page. It didn't have a front armrest and it did have Isofix despite not appearing as an option on the original bill of sale.
