As a postscript to the above, my local garage now think it is engine mounts.
However, they quote £280 for buying and fitting the rear o/side one which they believe to be the cause of the problem, this to me seems a little excessive.

Any ideas on where I might get engine mounts other than from Alfa??

Give Shop4Parts, EB Spares or AlfaShop a ring. They are all very helpful.
