Viewing a 1.9JTD M-jet 156
Discussion
Would you risk travelling a good distance to see a 2005 diesel 1.9JTD M-Jet 156, without seeing it start from cold? Potentially I have a bit of a logistical problem which could mean that, when I view it, it'll almost certainly be warm when I see it start. It did a lot of miles in it's first year and it now has 100k on it with a FSH. Your opinions please...
If the intercooler pipe has split you get constant black smoke under full throttle, as opposed to the usual diesel puff which quickly goes. You will also hear a whistling sound from the air leak and won't get the usual torquey punch - it will just feel flat. Any white smoke would be unusual!
But don't get too hung up about it as these are very strong engines that drive very well. They have little lag, are smooth and have a nice progressive rev range - they are the complete opposite of the VW PD lump in other words. So if the car drives smoothly and quickly all will be well.
Other than that just check the usual 156 stuff - do all electrics work (rear windows are often slow as they don't get used), are the tyres worn evenly, not too many clonks from the suspension, have you got two identical black keys and the locking wheel bolt key?

Are you buying from a dealer? /// Also, you'd be better off viewing a 2.4JTDm....if you can find one.
Buying privately, already had some pics sent so have some idea of what to expect from a bodywork point of view, plus the alloys look uncurbed. I know there's a lot more to it than that but from an initial perspective it looks tidy. Would love a 2.4 but I have to balance out cost of insurance and economy as well as power output. One more thing - check when it last had it's cambelt done. Alfa say 72,000/5 years, but ideally it shouldn't go past 60,000/4 years, so "yours" isn't far off it's second one. When you do it, change the waterpump too as the 4 valve JTDs (1.9 and 2.4 - Dave!) have a nasty habit of seizing the pump which causes the belt to jump...

Has FSH so I'd hope the first was done at 34-36k and the curent owners assures me the second was done at 72k - but if there is no documentation to support this then I'll get it done as a preventative measure. I've read about the waterpump failure issue so that'll get done as well. Thanks again.

I would be surprised on a JTD - that's more like a Twin Spark change, but it's great if it has been!dave_s13 said:
