Brera oil temperature guage

I am looking for a bit of help.

I bought a V6 Brera and the oil temp gauge has stopped working. I have been told by the nearest Alfa garage that it's an engine out job to fix the sensor.

I am new to Alfa's and was just wondering if this is genuine. Can anyone shed any light on this issue please?

I can't help too much although I also have a V6 Brera and needed the engine out for a fix to the driveshaft thingy. I wouldn't be too worried if it doesn't work as long as the oil levels are fine (on screen after ignition)?
