Mito 1.6 m-jet Veloce
Discussion
Is my current mode of transport, another loaner while the 156 is in the dealers. I thought I would report my thoughts on the car.
As far as I can tell it is a standard car, approximately 1 year old with 13k on the clock. It looks great outside and in, and the spec sheet is pretty generous. Once inside the seats are comfy and it feels nice and spacious up front, the instruments are clear but as you look closer there is lots of readouts squeezed into a small screen between the gauges. The Alfa'isms begin - lol. A quick look through the onboard computer shows it is up to the usual standard displaying trip info, external temperature etc and 44mpg? A little low for a 'new' diesel in 2010. So I drive to the nearest fuel station, but a couple of gallons in, reset and go.
At first I ignored the DNA bit and just drove. The car fidgets and tramlines quiet a lot. This is annoying, but at least it is a lot quieter than my 1.9 M-Jet 156. As the road opens up, I slip it into 'dynamic' mode and the car gets a little noisier and begins to accelerate all on it's own. The throttle is re-calibrated and is a lot more sensitive. A squeeze it some more and it really begins to fly. It is a touch quicker than the 156 I would say.
The road slows, but the dynamic mode is too eager and begins to get on your nerves, back in normal mode things relax, although it suffers from a lot of lag IMO. Another 20 miles down the road and the car has settles at 33mpg. I have the wife and x2 kids in the car, so there was certainly no scruff of the neck misbehaver, but the Peaks can make even the was frugal cars drink like a fish!
It has it's fair share of niggles. The ride isn't great, it doesn't seem to have evolved much IMO. The DNA thing is a waste of time, I sense, in trying to justify the existence of such a button they have tried to make the difference modes vastly different but in reality you get one sluggish laggy mode and one hypersensitive mode. The wiper stalk configuration is irritating, the gear stick is too tall and the throw is too long but the ratio's are improved over the 156 which is nice. And there was a fault on the seat belt sensors.
However the car has lots of great features though, the sound system is good, the bluetooth is fantastic, mp3 player is a nice touch and the quality has gone up a bit since the facelift 156 days and I would under some circumstances love this car as a replacement.
A cosy 6/10 but for my ca$h I would keep looking...........
