Punto mark 2 1.8 hgt
Discussion
Looking at these as a good warm hatch around sub 2k mark and these pop up in category.
Anything to look out for and do they handle well on the twisties..Or need a few mods..
I understand the steering problem but anything else..
is there a difference between abarth adn non abarth ones besides a few stickers...?

Mk1 turbos might be a bit quicker but the mk2 is a better car in my opinion.
I've had a mk1 Sporting and now have a mk2 16v Sporting 6 speed for a run around......and its a great fun little car to drive, I use it most of the time.
Quite stiff suspension and fairly wide tyres, so I think it handles well.....much much better than my mrs normal 5 door punto of similar age anyway.
The 1.8 would be nice, but the sportings look the same and have a fairly nippy and more economical little engine.
And there is no differnce mechanically with the Abarth as far as I know, just body kit and wheel options.

looking on the punto forums they advise the same with the stiff suspension. They only only maybe negative I have read is that it return about 25 MPG which might be a bit low for such a small engine..I've had a mk1 Sporting and now have a mk2 16v Sporting 6 speed for a run around......and its a great fun little car to drive, I use it most of the time.

Abarth should have slightly different seats and steering wheel too.
Fuel economy - mine returned 32mpg whether I thrashed it or drove like Miss Daisy.
Cam variators stop working occasionally.
You wouldn't notice any drop off in performance but when it's fixed you can feel the extra surge at 4200rpm.
Check if it's had any engine problems.
The engine first appeared in the Barchetta and, according to a buying guide I read of those - a lot had some repairs done.
My HGT snapped it's cambelt at 40k miles resulting in a rebuild.
They were never the highest rated cars in magazine tests but did ok.
I'd happily have another one.
