A "2007 57 Reg ALFA ROMEO 159 3.2 V6 JTS Q4 TI" Wagon caught my eye on AutoTrader (sorry, can't seem to post a link) - 57reg, but with 70k miles. £13995. Looking for some hints and tips on what I should be looking for in this car, anything to be wary of, should cambelt have been done around 60k?

Am I looking at some expensive maintenance post-70k? What price should I be looking at paying? Not seen many come up, so not really got a good feel for what they go for?

Any useful comments or pointers to Alfa forums appreciated. Always been a VAG man in the past (and presently), but always hankered after a V6 Alfa and given that I am looking for an estate anyway this seems to tick all my boxes at the moment. Many thanks.

Very very rare car, so that's why you won't see many about. Mechanically much the same as the non-Ti 3.2Q4 and Brera 3.2. Main everyday issue is mpg I'm afraid - probably about 20 average. The car should have a 3 year warranty on it from new which you can extend for about £400 a year. Try http://www.alfaowner.com for more info.

Thanks for the replies.

Doubt I can extend the warranty if it's already done 70k miles! And I guess it is "cheap" as it's done 70k miles as well! I don't know what the high-mile issues are with Alfa V6's - if it was a lower mileage I'd be jumping right in, but the higher-miles (on a brand that, without meaning to offend, doesn't have the greatest reputation for reliability) make me wary...

I looked at that car as well as considering a change from the GTA.

What really put me off was the mileage though. Fantastic looking car though.

Was that just from a generic viewpoint that cars at 70k have "done a few miles", or was it specifically becuase it was an Alfa or that you had concerns over that specific engine? Interested in your thoughts, as I have driven (and do drive now) cars with well over that, which (as long as well maintained) are perfectly fine, but I don't have any experience at all of Alfa's.

If it's done 70k in 2.5 yrs, I am guessing a lot of that may be motorway-related, and not short stop/start journeys causing engine-wear, so as long as it was appropriately maintained I wouldn't (as a point of principle at least) have any great concerns over the mileage.

Having said that though, I don't have any experience of Alfa's, and how they (and in particular the V6) handle the miles going on. So any input very much welcomed, thanks.

In the 159 it's not really an Alfa V6 (it's GM). It'll be no less reliable then the next car IMO. Having said that the proper Alfa V6 is a reliable engine anyway, the 16v TS with its high oil consumption and cambelt issues has been the source of any bad rep in recent times.

The V6 engine in the 159 is the GM unit. Saying that Alfa Romeo use there own head and vavle timing gear so its got some Alfa DNA. 260BHP if im right so plenty of power. The old Alfa V6 is a very reliable unit and would easily reach 200000 miles. Im sure the new engine will be just as reliable if looked after. 70000 miles in 2.5 years does suggest motorway so engine/drivetrain wear should'nt pose a problem.

No... didn't get chance to look at it before I went on 10 days hols, only came back 2 days ago, and what with work being manic and trying to sell my house it's slipped down my priorities.

But I do keep meaning to go and have a look, there just don't seem to be enough hours in the day, or days in the week, sometimes!!

(can't help thinking though that there still needs to be some downward movement in the price, and I have the nagging doubt over how hard it's been worked to rack up those miles in 2 years, and there will be no warranty left now. Flipside is of course they are probably easy motorway miles that won't have overly stressed the mechanicals, which means I'm getting a 70k priced-car that probably doesn't need the work doing to it that an "average" 70k car would, if that makes sense!!).
