Alfa 1.9 diesel
Discussion
Yes the engines are the same, and a good engine they are too. They aren't the quietest diesel in the class, but they are grunty and reasonably flexible in their nature. I can't make a comment on reliability as I've never owned one, but don't believe the crap you hear about Alfas on a daily basis. They are reliable cars, and will put a much bigger smile on your face than the Vauxhall equivalents.
They are very good engines. The 8valve is immensely strong, the 16valve has a slightly fragile waterpump set-up so make sure you change the pump at cambelt time. They have the odd EGR valve issue but these can be dismantled and cleaned if you are reasonably happy DIY'ing. The big thing though is how they drive - they are so superior to the PD VAG engines in everyway. Not that anyone will believe you of course...

I bought a new GT diesel in 2005 and had it for two years. Loved it and really miss it. Only sold it as I needed a 4WD and had too many other cars anyway.
Very reliable and comfortable car - but avoid 18 inch alloys as they give a hard ride. Mine had 17's.
Not an easy car to reverse though as there is limited rear visibility.
