Hi ya, Looking for a bit of advice with my 156.

For a while now the rear light/ brake light has been causing problems. The brake light is working correctly, but the normal light will not glow unless the bulb is removed and then put back in (if the lights are turned off and then back on the bulb will need to be taken out and put back in to work again). I was thinking it was an issue with the rear bulb tray/holder, I spoke to a mechanic yesterday (none alfa) and he played about with the rear tray, now the bulb does not come on at all, and the front passanger sidelight remains on even with the engine off.

I am trying to get a new tray and see if that fixes the problem, but I am clueless when it comes to electrics.

What has he done to it? and more to the point how can I put it right as I am having to remove the battery connection when I park the car up, as it drains the battery to leave it connected.

Hope that makes some form of sense, If not I will try and clarify.

TIA

Alf Alfa.

I experienced a melted bulb holder so that could be your problem, or something similar...have a good look to see if it's damaged...try Richard at http://www.alfabettacars.co.uk if you need another

Failing that, 156s have a problem where the rev counter causes bulbs to stay on (draining the battery), it will need replacing.

Cheers, I will have a look at that tomorrow.

How does the Rev counter cause lights to stay on or is it just an unexplainable glitch?

Yeah I would say Rev counter.

Quite a common problem.

Try asking or doing a search on alfa156.net

I have the exact same problem - I swapped the left and right light bulb holders over (they are the smae!) and it was still the off side one not working! so NOT the actaul holder... and the bulb warning light on the rev counter is always on - though that most likely be the LED sidelights!

There is a good Alfa breakers at Sherburn near Leeds/York if you are this way...

I'm in Gateshead so quite a drive, I had a look today seems the bulb holder is not the issue (done the swap it round and see trick as well), the bulb warning light has been on and off since I got it.

Out of desperation I even checked the fuses, then accepted defeat and booked it in with an alfa indy in Whitley Bay.

Anyone know what kind of money is involved in getting it right if it is the rev counter?

Apparently they can be repaired if you know what you're doing with electronics...but I don't.

They pop up for sale on ebay occassionally or you could try a breaker...fitting it is easy.

As I don't have a clue about the electrics, I let the garage deal with it.

Took them a few hours too repair some wiring and change the control unit. All is now (fingers crossed) well in the alfa.

Cheers
