Hey, I'm thinking about getting a new car next year and would quite like an alfa, my dad had one a few years ago and I quite liked it so what are peoples opinions on them, good and bad points?

It will be a daily driver but not used a huge amount as I will be at university. I've looked at insurance and the coat of the car and should be able to afford it.

There's a really good buyers guide both on this forum and on the alfaowner.com technical advice bit. Recommend you read this thoroughly before looking at any cars.

Pros - handling, ride, looks, grip, steering response, galvanised and plastic so very little rust, people perceive the car to be far more expensive and gucci than it really is.

Cons - tiny boot (take the space saver tyre out helps), electrical reliability, doors freezing shut in winter, windscreen scooshers freezing solid in winter, group 17 insurance, rear suspension bush wear and tear leads to expensive rear sub-frame damage, cam belts fail early, seats lack sideways support.

Recommend a post 98 car for the nicer interior, with cambelt and tensioners change completed. The red or tan leather interior is simply gorgeous. Exterior colour varies by your preference - I like my sport cars to be bright, my luxury cars to be discreet, but be aware that the bright rosso red fades at different rates across the various body panels. You'll average about 30mpg - other running costs are pretty much as per normal car from any other manufacturer, although it's increasingly hard to find specific pieces of trim, like rubber door seals.

The rear suspension on the GTV is expensive, but get one that has been looked after. Cheap normally doesnt mean cheerful.

Try and get one from an alfa specialist or an AROC or Alfoowner member. smile
