...in two terms of the phrase.

Firstly, the cam belt tensioner has gone (well within service intervals and with a FSH) resulting in a loss of compression on 4 cylinders. To the best of my knowledge this means at least a full strip/rebuild - and a bill somewhere in the region of £2k.

Secondly, for lots of reasons (mainly revolving around cars..), I do not have £2k to spend on getting it right. Which means that it must go - as it is.

So, now to the questions:
-How much is a '53 156 GTA saloon worth without a functioning engine?
-Are there any commercial buyers or do I have to resort to the unapettising depths of eBay?
-Why me and will I ever learn...?

Grateful for any help,

Joe.

Sorry to hear that, good luck with disposing of it. Would it not be worth advertising it on here? How about the Alfa forums?

Absolutely - I'm going to have to advertise everywhere I can think of. My problem is I don't know whether to ask for £2.50 or £2.5k!!! I suppose the simple answer is to invite offers, but that is where ebay fits in and ebay is a strange place...

If there any commercial buyers of such a thing at least I could get a straight out market value to work from...

I personally would steer well clear of eBay if at all possible - I sold a Fiat 20VT Coupe on there a year or so ago, an insurance write off with a good engine/mechanicals & a SS exhaust that cost me £300.00 - the car sold to the only bidder for £75.00 despite all the knobheads who contacted me to say they would 'definitely' be bidding on it. Funny enough they all missed the end of auction & felt the need to contact me after it had finished to try & do a deal. God I hate eBay!

"sigh" let me know hpw you get on. I have wanted one with a fubar engine for some time but now is not the right time for me money wise.

Its a tricky one to guage how much its worth though as its spec and condition dependant as well.

I mean right spec etc i would probably be happy to offer 1.5- 2.5k off the bat or even a potential swap for one of my cars as i have wanted rid for a while but just not got round to it. However as said not really the time for me right now.

Sorry to hear of your woes.

Autolusso will possibly buy it off you.

Putting it on ebay, you will get rock bottom price for it. You are much better selling to a trader.

Mention it in the GTA section of Alfaowner.com

Herbie - PM sent.

I definitely want to avoid ebay if possible - I once sold a car on there and the amount of 'interesting' characters sending emails and phoning with 'interesting' questions was beyond belief!

I'll give Autolusso a ring in the morning to see what they can do.

All of this, and any other, assistance is gratefully received. Thank you.

Assuming the rest of the car is in good condition (and it's not Boreal Green!) it has to be worth a minimum of £2k, definitely try Alfaowner, PH classified or Alfa Owner's Club classified.

I took some of the advice on here and hopefully I will have some (relative) success by the end of the week - it's certainly generated some interest!

With regard to ebay giving a rock bottom price - I should mention that a certain dealer (perhaps metioned above) offered fractionally more than the value of the wheels alone for the whole car!!

Still, it's their perogative and if they have plenty of GTAs then it has little value to them. Hopefully the right buyer will come come along, I'll get a reasonable return and they'll get a GTA back on the road at good price. Fingers crossed!

Thanks again for the tips.

Bit of colour prejudice going on here, take him to the race elations courts....smile

I used to have one of the very few Boreal Green GTA's and I loved it, so does the new owner............ but the colour did devalue it, despite it's rarityfrown

One day they may be valuable because of their rarity but I'm still standing by my view that 'Boring' Green is the worst colour for a GTA closely followed by Gabbiano Blue and Silver. I know it's subjective but I used to specialise in selling them and the most popular colours were Red, Black and Myra(?) Red.

I know, only messing about. I know its a very hit a miss colour. I wouldn't have chosen it, but the fact the car was the cheapest in the country at the time made me look past that. It's grown on me, and I'm quite fond of bogey green now, I still have it 3.5years later, the longest I have had the same car.

If you've still got it, I'd buy the car. Can you give me some more info?

Colour, interior, mileage, history, upgrades etc
