The ordinary 1 Series is a dreadful drive.

I had 118i as a loaner and then had to return my Father's loaner a 116d (both 2016 models by the way ) back to Torquay , about 130 miles in bad weather last December.

Too sluggish , rubbish manual box which was rubbery with lack of feel. Poor ride , I felt car sick. Cloth but supposedly sport seats (as they are all sports trim) lacked support , no steering feel and car seemed to wander across . That might be the run flat tyres, but still : no excuse, BMW.

118i was the same, apart from being faster which might bode well for a 118d not having the performance shortcoming the 116d has?

3 series: I've driven two 320Ds in Luxury and Sport trim, both manual (not a bad gearbox) and found them much better , reasonable performance , handling surprisingly okay considering not M Sport models. And it's a nice looking saloon.

I don't know how underpowered a 318 might feel. I found that same (or similar) engine configuration underpowered in a X1 (that's a jeep / SUV thing) but it was a four wheel drive and that did impact on performance.

I would assume the 318 is more expensive ,than 118 1series, unless its higher miles, lower spec or you buy privately versus a 1 series at dealership.

3 series would be my choice , although there is a 2 series ; you could maybe look into that if you would be happy with a 2 door coupe?

Hi Smuler! smile

This is the car
3 series http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-valuation/confirm-...

1 series http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-valuation/confirm-...

Is the 318 the sport trim version or the basic version?
Funny I went BMW place today and we looked around but we didnt ask anything because the shop was so busy so we went out empty handed.

Also am I going mad again because iirc the price when I checked in the store for the 3 series 318d is £20,000 and the 1 series 118 M Sport is £19,500 when
I thought both car is worth over £25k am I drunk?
What am I missing here? Why so cheap? Again the link I provided both car is under 1 years old and millage for each is under 5k any ideas what is going on?

You've attached Autotrader valuations, they seem pretty good.

With a 318D I don't think you'd need to pay 25k for a Sport trim, automatic with less than 10,000 miles as I found examples on the BMW Approved Database. See example below

http://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/3-Series/2.0TD-143bhp-31...

Similarly with the 118D, I found a very low mileage 2017 model, for just over £19,000 (the top of the autorader range)

http://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/1-Series/2.0TD-118d-Spor...

I think both these examples, can be negotiated on to get a lower price as they're quite common cars.

You've picked a manual for the 118 and an auto for 318, so try and test drive both in both gearbox variations too see which you prefer.

It's a shame they were busy, but what you can do is go on the Approved Used Wesbite, select a used car you like and then make an enquiry. Get them to do the work for you. You can with most dealers request a video of the car that way you can have a 'virtual look over it,' see what you think before discussing it further or calling into the dealership.

Oh I see now. How come some cost over £25k and the model and car is the same? The reg and mileage is not much different too.
May I ask how much do you think I will have to pay monthly if I deposit £5k on a £20k car? My plan is to pay less than £200 per month. Is that doable since the car is only 20k?

The only 318D auto less than 10k miles over 25,000£ I could find was registered in May this year - so about a month old, and just 16 miles on the clock.

Sometimes high specification (lots of extras) will push price up, or sometimes dealers will just 'try it on.'

I don't know much about finance, but with your deposit being 25% of the car and if you chose a finance deal, as per attached, then your payments have to be low as you won't be financing a great deal, as there's still the final payment to be taken into account.

http://www.bmw.co.uk/en_GB/topics/financial-servic...

  • Bear in mind, a new automatic 318D (sticking with this example) can be had for less than *27k£ plus whatever options you add.
If you can wait, it might be worth exploring this option, this way you get a new car.

  • I looked at discounts a well know broker (Broadspeed) offered, I would expect a dealer to beat the price.

On hire purchase, assuming 7%APR, you are looking at 300ish pm.

If you are looking for pcp (final balloon payment at the end) then it should be doable.

OP, you need to work out what you really want first!

After a Fiesta a 1 Series will seem big - a 3 Series will feel huge!

Will a saloon with a boot work for you, or do you need the practicality of a hatch?

What annual mileage will you be doing - might petrol be a better idea than diesel?

Performance doesn't seem to be a high priority if you are looking at 318ds and 118s, so why look at M-Sport models? Sport (without the M) are cheaper and probably offer all you will need from a dynamic point of view - and if you get one cheaper you should have enough of a saving to buy some bling wheels if that is the only thing that draws you towards an M-Sport! laugh

Hi Mr Tidy.

I think I have decided. I am going for the 118d
Why M sport? Because yesterday I went to BMWSynther place and I only see the M sport 118d and it's only £19k!!! I was like wtf is this right? Online I checked and pretty sure it cost around £24k... The car is reg sept 2016 and less than 5k Milliage. That's a good deal is it not?
If the 118d M sport cost 19k then the Sport or normal edition should be around 16-17k???
Also I want to make sure what gadgets do I get at default? I get all the satnav stuff right or do I need to pay extra for those?

Sorry if I'm asking dumbo questions I just want to make sure I don't regret it later loool

The "Shop" one at 19k£ is used, a year old, nearly, that's why it's £19k. Broadspeed are quoting brand new prices, that's why £24k, albeit instead of 28k if you're looking for a M Sport.

Also the 24k is for an automatic, if I'm guessing correct your 19k one is a manual, so that's also a reason why it's cheaper. £23k is price for a new manual.

So is £4k enough of a saving, for a year old car? I'm not so sure, it can depend on what this "shop" car has in terms of extra features, as the £23k is for standard.

if you can confirm the details of "Shop" car, then I guess it's easier to give an opinion.

I've driven a lot of loan BMWs since 2014-2016, none of which were M Sport. They were all inferior in driving experience, to my new X1 M Sport. So even if you are not going for a high performance car, M Sport trim is worthwhile, the cars drive so much better.

Are those all the simple features?

Also why 4K not good? £19k for a M sport is good already is it not?

Hi could you explain why?
Well from a 'Pistonheads' type view, its a vast amount to spend on a reletively slow diesel hatchback..

Is there nothing else that tickles your fancy? You could get one a few years old and save yourself perhaps £10k and even keep the BMW warranty!

http://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/1-Series/2.0TD-118d-SE/S...

40k miles really is nothing for these. And it gives you an idea of how much you will lose if you buy one with no miles for £20k - BMW would have probably given this person £7.5k for this - so thats 31p per mile in depreciation....

It is the whole 'new vs used' argument but this is Pistonheads so it kinda always comes up.....

In my opinion , I would be looking for more than 4K£ difference between a brand new car and a 1 year old car.

The older car will have less warranty , be lower in resale value , may already have wear on tyres and have been used by others. All this deducts value.

The only reason to change my mind would if the spec on the used car was good , in which case the difference would be (a lot) more than 4K ,as the new car wouldn't be 23k with that same spec.

I can't see your photo that clearly to know the spec of the Birmingham car.

But The 19k M Sport i guessed (wrongly) you liked had leather, LEDs, heated seats and new was "worth" 29k ; in which case the saving was more like 6k£ (10k difference less about 4K discount which seems the norm on new 118ds)

This one was orange though wink

I had a 118d for a while after an E70 X5 40d which I had to sell to help fund a house purchase, before buying a F25 X3 20d and the 1er was actually ok. I think the petrol ones are a bit lacking in oomph and although the 118d wouldn't set the world alight, it was grunty enough and a reasonably nice place to spend a few hours on a drive.

I actually ended up driving down to the Pyrennes in it together with 2yr old and all the rubbish that goes with them and it was a fine companion over the two day trip both there and back.

In the end, it was only sold as we needed a 4x4 for the farm track we live on to be able to guarantee getting on and off the farm in inclement weather (it floods regularly). Otherwise I think we'd still have the 1er.

Check this out: http://www.stratstone.com/bmw/events/delivery-mile...

22k for a virtually new 320d M Sport with 100 miles on the clock is serious value.

Like most manufacturers, the official price list is a comic to be used as a reference to how much you can get off.

The 118d Auto is a great car - but the 218d Coupe is better again. There's something a bit 'junior estate agent' about the 1 Series.

Sport versions have most of the useful bits but the ride is generally very decent.

I would personally have a 318d over a 118d - it's a modern day Sierra (millions about) but they drive very well. But I'd have a C Class over that....... 16 and a bit grand for a 116d is giveaway - check out the 66 plate 535d for 30k. That's cheaper than the last 520d.

I'm saying that, in my opinion, there must be a BIG enough saving on a used (nearly new) car to make it still attractive when there are decent discounts on brand NEW cars.

Otherwise, if the saving is small, why not buy a new car.

Orange car has a number of extras like LEDs, Heated Sears, Leather, Interior Comfort pack.

If you were to option these on a new car, even with a discount using Broadspeed as an example, it pushes the price to £25k.

Therefore, Orange car is 'saying' buy me, because for accepting that I'm used, you're saving £6k.

Having said that, there's a few other cars like Orange around, even if you just check the Sytner website; so if it were me, and I was interested in Orange, I wouldn't be wanting to deal at 19k£ Therefore, I'd try and push for an even bigger saving.
