I was heading North this evening about 7:00pm a little South of junction 39 for Chesterfield. The overhead gantries were showing a speed limit of 40mph and the inside lane closed. I was doing 40, truly, in the second lane when the gantry I was approaching cleared the speed limit and lane closure signs and showed derestriction (black stripe on a white background). I passed under the sign and started to resume motorway speed, I was in no particular hurry and I probably reached 50-55mph.

From the left there were 2 or 3 pairs of bright white flashes that I assume were speed cameras triggering. There was quite a bit of traffic around so I could not be sure it was me that triggered them. All the traffic was building speed but none was exceeding 70mph I'm sure. The whole thing played out in a matter of 2-300 metres.

Does this mean that speed cameras are not synchronised to the limits shown in real-time? How on Earth am I supposed to defend myself if an NIP drops through the door (given that I don't have a dash-cam)? Anyone else seen this type of thing? I'm hoping it was just a random glitch and nothing will come of it, obviously, what do you think?

These are the kind of images that are produced by the newer HADECS motorway cameras:

The info at the top of each image shows amongst others; the vehicle speed, the prevailing speed limit, and also how long since the speed limit was changed.

The second image shows a wider view that includes the gantry signs so that the prevailing limit is visible with the offending vehicle in view.

If the signs do indeed show "end of restrictions" then this will be visible in the photos, although if that is the case, you shouldn't receive anything in the post since you weren't speeding in the first place.

Thanks Mandat, that's very encouraging and certainly my conscience is clear on this occasion.

Interestingly both pictures show exactly the same time to the second. Shouldn't the gantry picture show what was displaying when the car actually passed under it?

It does as far as I can see. It's when the speed camera flashed.

No it doesn't. The car is in a different lane and further up the road in the second pic so it was taken later.

I had exactly the same thing happen to me on the M1 somewhere a bit south of Sheffield back at the end of October. I kept the front and rear dash cam recordings for a while, but no NIP came through, and nothing happened. Hopefully you'll be fine, too. smile

No it isn't.

You need to look again.

The pic showing the gantry is taken about 3/400 metres further back at the same time showing the same image but 3/400 metres further back.

The speed limit shown on the photos is NSL, therefore I would expect the gantry signs to be off, which they are.

The two photos are taken at the same time but from different cameras, which is why they show a different perspective.
