1.4 TU engine in Berlingo
Discussion
Have a Berlingo with the 1 4 petrol fitted which I believe is similar to the unit used in the old Pug 206s (had one in the past)?
Not expecting a rocket ship and it drives well enough but feels like it's low on power, especially in lower rev range where it seems to hesitate marginally at lower speeds. Over 2000 revs usually runs okay.
Car starts immediately, idles fine. Temperature good. No known recent history. No EML.
Car has had an after market air filter (think the originals are known to come loose). Have attached a picture.
If you were going to work through possible causes would you go in this order? What is the order of likeliness?
Air leaks
MAF sensor
Spark plugs
Coil pack
Based on previous experience with engine (if same as the old 206) I had a problem with intermittent stalling when slowing down which was cured by a new coil pack. I know these are sensitive to the pack breaking down.
This is kinda fun detective job, know I could take it to a garage but curious as to possible reasons. Thoughts techhie gurus of PH?

Hesitating on acelleration, check plugs and coil pack. I know you said you changed the coil pack but was it genuine or aftermarket? Genuine second hand from a scrappy is often better than aftermarket new.
Haven't actually fitted a coil pack to this, just recall did on a 206 and had to make sure it was a decent one as these engines use it for feedback in lieu of some sort of sensor. Interesting!Old Merc said:
I would get the air filter and intake hose back to the original type. Plenty of them at the breakers?
Then get a fault code check before you start throwing parts at it.
Agree would like toreplace air filter back to standard. Then get a fault code check before you start throwing parts at it.
Have an OBD Bluetooth reader somewhere! Must dig it out.
Just to follow up on this thread. Issue fixed!
Error codes on my Bluetooth dongle were as follows:
P0008 - Engine Position System Performance - Bank 2
P0122 - Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Low Input
P2122 - Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch "D" Circuit Low Input
So took a gamble on throwing a new coil pack at it (413735087 Bosch Ignition Coil Citroen Berlingo Multispace 1.4 2009) as I'd read, either correctly or incorrectly, that the car doesn't have a traditional cam sensor, relying instead on feedback from the coil? Mines the grey connector which matches the grey sensor that plugs into it. Bought the Bosch one through ECS with 30% off for about £65, preferred that over a non-branded make.
So even though it's bad advice to chuck parts at a car I've done exactly that, 10 minute job thankfully even for a clueless primate like me!
Result is a smoothly running car with consistent acceleration. Throttle response seems fine so seems to have been the right choice.
Clock that up as a win for my lack of knowledge!
