Volvo - CarPlay, you bet - Winter Project Thread
Discussion
I've been meaning to post a bit about this but was waiting to see how things progressed before getting too excited.
The full project details further below but firstly, CarPlay.
My car is currently nesting back in the UK with the guys at Aston Installations. I had their iPhone mirroring kit on my previous DBS and while enquiring with James to his availability, for the same on my new DBS, he mentioned that they were working on a CarPlay solution but needed a car for a period of time. The better half and I are looking for a new place in the new year; so a deal was struck up that they have my car for a few months. AI have their mule, I don't have the hassle of moving it between storage places - winner winner.
Today I had a pleasant surprise:

That is using the standard Volvo unit. I had spoken to James about upgrading the screen but that presents new issues; the motor control, car integration, how much hacking they'd potentially need to do (that's not to say they won't explore it in the future) and the obvious one.... can you actually reach the screen safely while driving? The good news is the Volvo image quality with a strong signal is actually really sharp.
Given the SatNav isn't a touch screen there is a wheel control to move around the interface, thus keeping all the standard steering wheel functions working perfectly.

It's still in the prototype phase but it's encouraging to see we can use new tech with our olde dinosaurs.
Other bits (literally) of the winter project
Before the above all started, I'd purchased my DBS from Dubai, the exterior colour is stunning, the interior a little more rude boy red. The plan was to strip the interior this winter and get the car reupholstered in a more befitting colour. Given James was keeping the car for such a long time to prototype CarPlay and they've had pretty much most Aston's in pieces, it again made sense to get this done at the same time.
The interior currently lies like this:

We're trialing a 360 camera kit too, I'm not sure how that's going but I'll post some photos and videos once it's all done. Glass buttons are also being fitted. My guess is probably March, hopefully before Brexit so I can get my car back
. I'll try and keep the thread updated.
