Chimaera Tyres for 17" wheels
Discussion
My Toyo T1Rs are coming to the end of their life as it's been a good few years since they were replaced.
It's got 17" wheels all round, - 225/45 ZR17 rear 215/40 ZR17 front.
It's a weekend toy, so mainly fair weather hill-hooning, a few tunnel runs and the occasional charity track day type of driving. I try to avoid the rain were possible, but something that wont kill me in the damp would be good. It's only done about 1000 miles in the last 4 years for various reasons, so I don't really want to spend hundreds on new rubber but it will be getting more use now that it lives back at my home.
Are T1Rs still considered a reasonably decent mid-price tyre, or has something better come out in the last 6 years?
It had Fk452 prior to that, and some Avons prior to that. I'm no expert or driving god, but the T1Rs have felt much more comfortable and confident than the others.
What's the current preferred choice of rubber these days?

I bought a new set of T1Rs last Nov (on standard 15F / 16R wheels) because I got a good price on a set from a local place.
Several owners have taken a liking to Uniroyal Rainsports, and not just because they're good in the wet. It makes them good in the dry too apparently, but I have no experience of them.

So many threads on tyres.
Toyo T1R's are an ancient tyre and things have moved on.
Uniroyal Rainsport 3 is a great all round tyre and will stand up to some track action.
Nankang NS-2R is a very good trackday tyre that is road legal and a very good wet rating - compared to other road legal trackday tyres and a lot of road tyres.
I've used both on and off track. In monsoon and shine. In sweltering hot and freezing cold. I recommend both would meet you needs. Whether they are in the sizes you quote, I don't know. Probably the Uniroyal. You may have to adjust size for the Nankang's.

I have the Uniroyal RainSport 3's fitted to mine on 17s - very happy with them.
Size wise I got 215/45/17 87Y on the front and 235/45/17 94Y on the back.
I updated my tyre size in the OP last night, more as a reminder for myself than anything, but do you have any problems with the front tyres rubbing on full lock at that profile size? I've got a small spacer fitted just to prevent rubbing.Size wise I got 215/45/17 87Y on the front and 235/45/17 94Y on the back.

Nope, mine are all good! It is tight, though...I certainly wouldn't want to go any bigger!Gassing Station | Chimaera | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
