Hello Everyone,

I thought i would share with you my growing fondness for my Renault Megane Coupe Super Sport and yes this is its official name which made it stupidly hard to insure.

Im not sure if you have seen the other thread but a few of us decided we would do a bit of a road trip, Lands end to John o'groats.

Whilst we was up north we would also do the north coast 500 so around 2200ish miles in 5 days.

To do this journey i set about about looking for a reliable faithful steed, after a few nights on ebay i won...

I won a Renault Megane for a grand total of £94 with an overheating issue.

The Steed

First thing on the agenda was to sort the overheating issue, it was quickly apparent by this point it was the water pump, so for £13 delivered was a brand new water pump

At this point a bit of a boo boo was made, i had taken the timing belt off and was cleaning out the old water pump when my dad came around and span the bottom crank pulley, he had assumed i had locked the engine out, but i hadnt, i had no locking tools so was just being careful. TIMING well and truly out...

i fitted the new water pump and set about re timing the engine... (thankfully the old belt looked fairly new)

Put it all back together and Dammit... a tooth out as she was running like a bag of nails..

All back apart and another go at getting TDC

Thankfully second time lucky and after putting it all back together she Ran.. and she ran well..

Also the K4M engine seems to have a weak thermostat housing which seems to be a common failure on these cars giving head gasket issues with the oil water mixing.. Old one off and cleaned, new bit of sealant should work

The wife wasnt happy with my cleaning method

Next the rear lights on the number plate and brake lights were not working this was traced was to the rear wiring loom was in tatters

Next up was some rubber, a quick gumtree search discovered a set of 182 alloys with tires for a grand some of £60

Thankfully my Mechanic was there to help

Then some serious weight reduction and carpet removal as the carpets Stank

Next up was wiring of the radios and making a panel for my volt meter and extra charging units

Next was some under bonnet lights, surely i will be fixing it at some point on the road trip right? its french after all

After a 30 mile test drive i dropped the oil to check there wasnt any mixing (night before road trip)

At this point the car had only covered 30 ish miles and was about to be thrown into 2200 miles of abuse

The evening we departed

.

I have so many pictures of the in between if anyone is interested as the next picture is John o'Groats

The thread from the road trip i'll insert here later or more pics on my instagram - craigyinni

But the good news is she made it and made it well, only issue was on day 3 of harsh driving after 9 hours of pretty much non stop the clutch slipped a few times (4 times in total)

After a nights rest she was good to go and hasnt slipped again since.

Since its now home we are planning another road trip so im currently in cross roads, do i sell and do another product or do i better this one? ive heard this is a clio chassis so 172/182 swap ? coilovers.

Has anyone got much experience of these cars engines?

Thanks all for reading

I'd avoid coilovers. Cheap ones are naff and will make the ride very harsh and expensive ones will cost more than the car.

Great cars, getting rare now. Love the colour.

Sell it and buy a 172.

It'll save a lot of fecking about in the long run.

Would love a 2.0vvt one of these. The k4m engine is good I have one in my Twingo running 165ish bhp. I think you should stick with it as it's good to be different and nice seeing an old coupe getting some tlc. Keep us updated with your progress.

The twingo has 133 as standard but mine has cams, manifold, exhaust and is mapped. You could always look for a 133 engine and swap it with yours. If they come with a 2.0vvt engine I would think a 172/182 engine could be an easy ish swap and would be cheaper than tuning. I have kept my k4m due to it being a rally car and I got all my bits for about a quarter or the retail price. I am going to keep an eye out for a 2.0vvt coupe as I like to be different.

I have a proper soft spot for these. If I had one I would be shunting a 172/182 engine in and setting it up for some track work.
