My f80 m3 was in at bmw for some work for a few things including parking sensor and idrive controller replacement. I also told them to check the battery out as it had broken down at my home and wouldn't start, I called the rac out and they had managed to bring it back to life and they also suggested that the battery needs to be replaced as it is faulty. When I told bmw about it they said that they will charge it overnight.
I gave the car in on the 14th of March, only got it back this Friday gone (1st April). It started fine when I picked it up.

But on the night I picked it up, I tried starting it but it wouldn't start first time. Instead it came up with the error saying 'Engine start not possible, contact bmw Road assistance'. It eventually started on the 3rd time of asking. Tried starting it again today but it won't start at all and keeps coming back with the same error. I'm so annoyed as I left the car with them for 3 weeks yet its only lasted 2 days with me.

Has anyone experienced something like this before?

Note: I bought the car from Cazoo and its under warranty through them so the repairs are being done by my local bmw via Cazoo.

Planning to ring bmw in the morning to complain about the issue.

Does the warranty even cover the battery?
Would it not be better to just buy a battery, it's a running cost of used cars TBH.

Reading the Cazoo warranty it appears to exclude 12-volt batteries.

Is it correct that the car wouldn't start, the RAC attended and said that the battery needed replacement?

The garage charged the battery and the car started. When left in your garage and not charged, the car wouldn't start.

Have I misunderstood?

Yes they said they gave it a full charge while it was with them and according to them it was fine, even though the rac said it wasn't. Cazoo have said they are willing to cover the cost of the battery as I have only recently bought the car from them and I have reported multiple issues from it. I am hoping that bmw will take it in tomorrow, even if that means calling out rac again

Maybe the car was sitting around for a few months and the battery discharged and is now a problem.
A C-Tek MXS 5 charger for £60 and it's battery re-fresh mode may be the answer.
The car may monitor battery condition so a few couple of hour runs may also help.

It's a lithium-ion battery in the F80 M3, unlike regular 3 Series with an AGM unit.

If it’s Li Ion it will have a BMS and I’d be very careful running a re-fresh on a Lithium battery that’s quite possibly designed for a lead acid one..

there is a reason, the alternator varies output based on the battery condition. i guess with new tech batteries probably don't last as long as traditional ones, you have to preprogramme it as well when fitting new battery. BMW should have made sure alternator output was high on low battery, they probably didn't and battery went flat again, or faulty or use lost charge.

BMW electrics only work in very specific voltage perimeters, so top top make sure battery is looked after.

5 years is typically how long these batteries last . Often main dealers have decent deals going and it’s not a diy job to change as you need to reset to the car after fitting

do you leave it standing for long periods. When you speak to BMW ask them did they check the alternator output?

Tough break OP but at that age I think you're gonna have to pay for the new battery and hope it solves the issue
