Decent walking shoes

I want to get back to doing a bit of walking like I used to but been too busy of late. Not hiking as such just walking round town and such. I went out a few nights ago and did about 6 miles but the next day my feet were absolutely killing me, I just had a pair of trainers on, every step I took felt like a shock, zero cushioning whatsoever and those disabled pavement things for the blind felt like stepping on a plug so I need something decent to wear as it put me off for now.

I swear by Meindl Philadelphia GORE-TEX Walking Shoes. Literally the best everyday shoes I’ve ever had and I replaced the first pair with another exactly the same.

+1 with the Salomon walking trainers. Mine are Gortex and have an excellent lace up system. I've worn them practically every day for over a year now and will buy another pair if they ever wear out.

Edit to say, the Meindl Philadelphias do look good !

That was my immediate thought as well. I’ve had 3 pairs of Salomons. Far better than anything else ive ever tried.

These are the current ones (GTX 3 I think), absolutely battered but still great. I reckon I’ve had them 4 years now and if I’m not running then it’s these or my wellies that go on. No idea how many miles they’ve covered but must be getting on for 1000. I’ve found they’re actually comfy enough for running in (even if a bit chunky and heavy).

Fingers crossed my Mrs might have bought me pair no.4 tomorrow.

Cheers for the replies, are the various ones mentioned cushioned at all as that was the main problem I had I think, it was like I had a pair of slippers on. Also just as a quickie why was the top both feet sore the next day, sort of the area a footballer would volley a ball, its never happened before and I have done plenty of walking in the past, usually end up with shin splints though.

Yeah good cushioning in the salomons, but if you want big cushioning maybe see if Hoka do any walking shoes?

I can't rate Dolomite Cinquantaquattro walking shoes highly enough. Not the easiest to get hold of in the UK but Tiso do them. Supremely comfortable and hard wearing. Love mine.

Another vote for the Salomon xa pro 3D gtx ... to give them their Sunday name.

The “gtx” is whether they have the gore tex waterproof liner. Makes quite a difference on price. I’ve had 4 or 5 pairs now and really rate them.

There’s also a new model out, the “v8”. They sound good.

Ok I found these at sports direct and narrowed it down to what will fit etc. Which one is best? What about the actual boots are they a faf to get on and off.

I like the salomon gtx ultra too, having had a few pairs, and an currently waiting for a deal for the next ones. Though be aware the fit is small, and they aren't waterproof.

I like timberland walking boots, they have a narrow heal and broad foot that suits me. I have had their shoes in the past too and been very pleased.

Shoe shape and size are very personal. I had a pair of merrells I never got on with as the heel fitting is too wide for me. I would get yourself to a shop and accept it is going to cost you £80-£150 and you can then save online on subsequent purchases.

The best pair will be the ones that fit you best.

There are many quality makes, the fit is not always the same.

Invest some time at a local shop and get a fitting.

Then purchase the ones you feel are the best.

I've an assortment of Merrell goretex for walking, all with different levels of tread and I'll choose the one that best matches the conditions underfoot.

I've also got both Brookes and Asics running shoes when I'm sticking to walking on tarmac.

The pain on top of your feet is probably due to lacing too tight. Remember that your feet will swell as you exercise, so start them off with laces very loose.

Ive had two pairs of these now, both bought brand new never worn off of eBay for £40 and £60, I wear nothing else now apart from Salomon, I'm on the hunt for the next pair of Xa pros, I've worn out the first pair now.

I’ve tried most of them, I’ll only buy Meindl now, for me they are very comfortable but the biggest selling point for me is how long they last.

Second for me are merrell, though they don’t fit me quite as well as the meindl.
I wouldn’t touch Salomon again, fell to bits within a few months my last pair.
