Renault Zoe vs I3 vs Nissan Leaf

So my dad has decided to go full electric. He’s looking at either a Nissan Leaf Technica, an I3 and a Renault Zoe with a budget of £14k he is unsure of what car to go for. Any advice from people who have owned them would be much appreciated.

He’s looking to finance the car over 5 year so is looking for something that will hold value and would be best overall.

Depends what he wants. Most EV range is 40kwh Zoe hands down.

Fastest/most-polished/interesting is i3 REx, but also has potential for big bills (get a warranty).

LEAF is the most like a normal car.

He'd be better with an Ampera as EV's will improve in the meantime the Ampera is a very good option.

14k? get a 30kwh leaf acenta, for this money you'll get a 2017 car out of lease, could get it cheaper. Solid 80 miles in winter 120 in summer. Nil running costs.

That is a valid point - costs me roughly £3 to do 100 miles. That's close to nil!

- 0 tax
- neglible use or tyres and brakes (i'm on original tyres and brakes after 3 years and 17k miles - tyres are 50% pads at 80!)
- once you stop servicing with Nissan, which is super expensive for what it is - you can service it really cheaply!

should hold its value as well if not appreciate a bit

worth mentioning that after 3 years and 17k miles my car is sitting at 93.4% battery health.

If he went for a Leaf what would be the top spec to get etc? As he likes his gadgets.

I looked at the same 3 cars and ended up with a Zoe because:
It has 5 seats, a decent sized boot and proper usable rear doors unlike the i3.
Best range.
Cheapest to buy and run.
Best handling and ride although it can get a bit bouncy on some country roads.
I found the Leaf to be incredibly uncomfortable.
Better battery management than the Leaf.
After 2 years and 60k miles I have been very happy with it, running costs are tiny and depreciation had been almost nil.
It is no accident that the Zoe is Europe's best selling EV.

No it's a Plug in Hybrid that has a 50 mile battery range so if you dads doing short trips it'll cost him nothing should he want to go further afield then there are no issues.

That’s not a bad car, but he’s after a small car. I think for the mileage he does which is around 5k a year, full electric could be better. Unless there is some small plug in hybrids?

If he does small miles then it's perfect for him an electric car like the leaf is only 10mm shorter than an Ampera, yes it has between 30-50 miles less range than a fully electric car but he's also not limited if he wants to travel further.

Can anyone tell me the service costs from main dealers for the Zoe, I3 and Leaf?

He’s not keen on the Vauxhall I’m afraid. Doesn’t like the look of it. The only other car that’s a PH is a GTE as the others are the Outlander which is too big and a few 330e and C class. Both of which have high mileage and would cost an awful lot if something where to go wrong.

hmm well I would recommend japs, and yes hybrid, not EV yet!

Toyota Auris Hybrid 1.8 or Lexus CT 200 Hybrid, both less than 10k in Toyota/Lexus Approved used with one year warranty.

BMW I3 is pretty handsome car, my mate has it. I can tell you though, his commute is purely central London to keep miles away from his Fezza!
