Have I been living under a rock or is this a new pain in the ass bit of technology which is going to be used (ultimately) to hoodwink unsuspecting buyers into purchasing cars with higher mileages than shown on their odo

Sadly more common than you think and it seems the people that use them (and mileage correction) don’t actually think they are doing anything wrong.
We had a client that used corrections on some lease vans a few years back. When we found out and proved it he was very defensive until he was asked what he thought of the people that broke into his van and stole his tools. The lightbulb then clicked.

Unfortunately not new. Had a friend who purchased a used M140i, three weeks into ownership he noticed it was logging around 1 mile for every 10 (something around that figure).
He had to take it to BMW and then had a battle with the finance company, but finally he managed to offload it without any financial loss.
Suspect a lot of high performance cars (Golf Rs, M140/M135is), would have this software loaded.

Reducing the speed "shown" does not alter the speed / distance recorded by other Controllers. If it is only fitted at the Dash, it only alters what is seen, not what is used or recorded via other modules. Some of these work be reducing the speed show by 90%. Engine Speed x Selected Gear x Final Drive x Tyre Circumference still calculates mileage.
Additionally, wheel revolutions / time is monitored (sometimes logged) by ABS and Transmission control modules.
I can't help thinking that it would relatively easy for manufacturers to stop this?
However, who benefits most? (rhetorical!) Those that buy new cars on PCPs, so where is the incentive for a manufacturer?
Why drive some of your customers to buy another make that is still easy to block.

Not really, just means the car does more miles between services. Away from mileage manipulation digital service records are stopping people buying the pre stamped service books on eBay. There are many sellers with a selection of main dealer stamps who can produce you a perfect history.

I interpreted it as doing that, yes. They claim on the website that the mileage never enters any of the modules on the car. Apparently this is superior to 'mileage correction' as that only affects what is shown on the odometer whilst the other control modules in the car are aware of the real mileage. The mileage blocker however completely prevents mileage entering the system. So yeah, it would trash up the service routine as the vehicle would not know it had covered the mileage. Therefore you would have to manually calculate the service schedule based off some other recording device like a sat nav data logger.... or, you could act like the vehicle did not require any servicing and remove the blocker before you sell the car and pretend it has a full service history. ridds said:
