Watched this last night on Five, simply because of the old 'how can I comment if I haven't even seen it' gem.
What a strange, silly little film. Who actually likes this stuff!? I'm totally onboard with the whole gratuitous female nudity that occupies the majority of the first 45min or so, but the torture and dungeon malarkey? WTF?
So many things in the world don't spin my props, but I can still see the appeal for others. Not this. This is just weird, and I'm quite sure I wouldn't want to spend any time in the company of anyone who would consider this a worthwhile piece of entertainment.

I wouldent call it a horror film. . . more of a shock thriller.
The eyeball bit towards the end got me.
Right. To me the fun part of a horror movie is the tension/release. It's a hoot because you can be "scared" but not really because you're just watching the TV. Great entertainment. I've never enjoyed the movies that try to disgust you. For me - being disgusted isn't fun. The eyeball bit towards the end got me.
I haven't seen Hostel so I can't say if it's a horror or a disguster. I have heard the latter so I'm not bothered about seeing it. That may be unfair, I accept. But there's lots of moves waiting to be seen so if I give it a miss it doesn't bother me.
Hmm
If you think the 1st is bad, watch 2
I borrowed it and fast forwarded to the gory parts to see what the fuss about
I can handle horror as entertainment, but to my mind entertainment horror was best when it was the likes of Nightmare on Elm Street, Return of the living dead (obvious 'fantasy horror' in other words)
H2 made we want to
, its just seriously sick s
t with no real point or story and was made somewhat worse by the fact it was women getting the torture etc (bound to be some sick f
k out there getting off on it)
I can even stomach the Saw films, as with them there appears to be a great degree of thought in the traps and plot line, but the 'H' films are a good argument for censorship (and believe me, normally I couldnt be more against that!)

Picked up the DVD of 1 ages ago, not seen the film prior, didn't read the back just saw Tarantino's name on it so bought it on sight as most of his stuff has been good. Worst €20 ever spent...

A friend of mine who's into his films describes this genre (Hostal, Hills have Eyes, etc) as "horror porn". An exercise in as much shock as can be crammed into a film.
I saw 3 minutes of it last night. And all I saw was a rotund bloke eating a salad with his fingers.
That's how I see them too, not nice - watched Cabin Fever and it left me cold (same genre - who can make the worse film to titilate 14 year olds)I saw 3 minutes of it last night. And all I saw was a rotund bloke eating a salad with his fingers.

Severence was much better...........

I can get my head around torture if it was for a reason, ie to extract info - not saying I condone, just that I can kinda get my head around it.
But not this, to think that there could be places in the world where humans can pay to mutilate and torture other humans (or even animals) is horrific.

True story

Don't be so naive, this may happen but that film had no factual relevance at all.
This film is utter utter s
t, its just b
ks and has no point to it, and its infact funny how s
t it is, you may as well try and find a proper snuff movie (if such a thing exists) at least it would be real, and then be scary..
Much like that b
ks Wolf Creek.. Based on true events, erm.. no actually it was not at all, just made up s
te.

True story? Hope not, I'm thinking of heading east for New Years tricky69 said:

Its not really horror, its just 30mins of erotica followed by 45mins of mutilation.
Its entertainment at the end of the day. I dont always look for compelling story lines (or even story lines that make sense tbh) when chosing a film. Sometimes you just want to slump on the couch and watch something, and Hostel is something.
Why do you think people need to get off on the subject matter to be able to enjoy the film though? Take 8mm with Nic Cage as an example. I didn't get off on the subject matter, but enjoyed the film.
The problem with comparing Nightmare on Elm Street with Saw or Hostel is that they were made in different eras. Would Nightmare have been made more gory if they could have made the gore realistic? Who knows.
I really enjoyed the SAW films up until 2, maybe 3, but specifically 4 I thought it was just gore for gore's sake. And, to my surprise, I saw a 5th one is in the cinema soon
I think a balance is needed. I'd have probably enjoyed Hostel more if they only suggested what was being done to the prisoners rather than it actually shown being done.
As for whether Hostel is real? I'm sure it wasn't based on fact, but I can certainly beleive places - and people - like that exist. There are so many disposable people in this world that surely it would be an easy thing to do.

ks, I missed the first 45 mins!!Gassing Station | The Pie & Piston Archive | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

) and the second half contains about 5 minutes of gore and that's about it.
