I’m near Crewe. But I’ve pretty much committed to the engine rebuild now, bought the pistons, gaskets bolts etc.
I'd suggest you get a second opinion on the noise....you could try Lohen at Stafford who are Mini specialists.
This was going to be my suggestion, unfortunately the Mini specialists I know are miles away from the OP (Camberley and Colchester)

Sorry forgot to update!
Highly sceptical of piston slap.
Never heard of it on a Mini One.
Back in on Thursday to drop the sump and examin the rod bearings and oil pump.

We will see!

Sounds like they know what they are doing and gives me confidence when I speak to them, which is rare for a garage!

Cheers for the recommendation.
Unfortunately they can’t tell me exactly what it is other than ‘timing or cam related’ However the key point is they have ruled out piston slap or major wear. Leak down and compression test was ‘perfect’ and one of the best engines they have seen.

So the £600 of parts I’ve bought for a rebuild are on the way back to the suppliers and I’ll carry on with trying to locate the damn noise! smile

I’m also going to be on the phone to Mini on Monday to try and get my £99 back, but I’m not holding out much hope!
