Very likely to lose money if you factor in maintenance and repairs (frequency thereof and parts prices).

Not even close to where my money would go.
The E34 M5 was a lovely car...........20 years ago. Now they're just a potential money pit because rust and miles have got the better of most. If really want an old E34 Estate, a 540i manual for half the price would be a much better bet.

I can recommended an Impreza WRX Estate. I love mine but only 227bhp as standard and modifications really rack up insurance costs (my old insurance company even wanted me to fit a Tracker). Unfortunately, they didn't do an STI estate but a WRX PPP comes close and they are great to drive and great value for money. An Audi is probably the one to go for if you need more standard power, although you will be looking at older/higher mileage and perhaps not as fun to drive?
