Budjet up to about £12K.

I think the RX-8 may just be too thirsty.

I want a car that's nice to drive, different, 2+2 min, under 2 years old.

This should tick your boxes..................

Just been looking again for a potential 500 replacement as it's going at some point in the next 12months & realise RX-8's are really cheap. A good, low ,mileage car, under 2 years old for under £10k.
So after 5 pages, what do you think? What do you want / need from your next car, what's your budget?

Think of it this way - the RX8's MPG is the price you pay not for its straight line performance but its combination of handling balance and 4 seats, the combination of which is facilitated by having a tiny rotary engine.

If you appreciate the great handling that comes from a mid-front engined car plus proper rear seats, at least take one for a test drive.
one has to wonder, if all that is true (which I suspect it is) why have Mazda never made a "Type R" like version of the RX-8 (yes lol its not a Honda wink ). But what I mean is, as it is so suited to handling and point to point performance why have they never built a more focused version in the same vain as a DC2 ITR. Very focused and lightened. Still be a 4 seater but the beat handling somewhat fastest 4 seater toy money can buy.

Btw don't some claim the steering is too light in the RX-8?

I was offered a 2004 RX 8 today with 90k miles for £2k. I would have had it if everything wasn't tied up right now. Amazing value for money.

PZ... (or R3).

Not lightened, but tightened and focused (rather harsh ride, IMO).

The RX8 was never intended to be a hardcore sportscar like the RX7 (They are two different models, the RX8 was not intended as a replacement for the RX7, just they didn't have a 7 version at the same time as the 8), so I guess Mazda decided that stripping a little weight out wouldn't be worth the trouble or have much of a market.

What people often forget in their dismissal of the 8 is that it's been by FAR the most successful rotary car ever in terms of sales... PHer fantastists might have preferred the idea of an expensive RX7 replacement with near supercar performance, but Mazda would never have sold a fraction of the number of 8s with something like that.

Not driven an S30 myself, but I've yet to see a review that was complimentary about the way they drive...

I like the way they look though and I rather like the Mito too (does that drive better?).

From what I understand we get the top spec models over here in the form of the 231. On the jap home market there is a much larger selection of models with different specs, such as wheels, air con, climate control etc etc. So not so much type R but I think there is a mazdaspeed version out there.

Of course I could be completely wrong.....

+1 on interested in that 2k 2004 231 for sale....

You might also want to consider an Alfa 159, or a Lexus IS220d, both within your spec requirement.
Lexus has RWD biggrin

I guess that depends on how you view it. In many ways I think the RX-8 is unique, but for me I see it as a competitor to 3 different types of car

1. Would be today's bloated hot hatches. I personally feel the RX-8 would easily be as practical as most 3 door hatches and many 5 door ones. So a Golf GTI, Audi S3 or Focus ST would be my comparison and I'd much rather the RX-8 than any of the others. Mpg against the Focus for instance isn't so bad either nor is performance.

2. Coupes such as the 1 Series. Some would argue the 350/370z but I'm not sure I agree as they are pure 2 seater cars.

3. A 4 door Elise alternative. Not a Market I've noticed Mazda Market the car in, but the more I think about it the more it makes sense. More so if they did a lighter more focused version. It would almost be like a budget Evora class car.

There are more versions in Japan, but I don't believe there was ever a specific Mazdaspeed version (you'll find plenty advertised as such, but they usually just have body kits...).

The R3 (as sold here until recently and probably still in your local dealer, gathering dust) is the fastest version currently and has the same 231BHP engine.

1. You wouldn't get a mountain bike in the boot of an RX8.

2. Yes - RX8 is probably bigger inside

3. Maybe - Too refined (and heavy) in stock form and Mazda will never sell a stripped out one now, but you could do it yourself with all the aftermarket parts available (loads of Carbon panels and suspension kits)
