I've got a £3k budget for something fun to drive, the initial plan was for a Mk1 MX5 but i've always loved the RX8's and with them available for less than £3k now it's an option i can't just ignore.

It will become my only car, and at present i don't do many miles so the low MPG doesn't worry me too much, if anything it'll encourage me to cycle to work more often. (Good thing)

So, cheap RX8 or good Mk1 MX5?

THIS. Any rx8 around that money will have hot starting issues!

It'll be that cheap for a reason, avoid it!

Although it'd make a good project or something to break down for parts, I've thought of getting one again and trying to fit the engine etc to my FTO smile

The budget's not that tight but I think i'd rather have a good MX5 than a poor RX8.

Test drive.

Won't guarentee that problems won't occur, but you'd get the chance to make sure it doesn't already have them.

That's good advice, and indeed would have been the plan - had i not bought a Mk1 MX5 last night.

Thanks though.

You don't know that for certain. If anyone is seriously interested they should a) know what to look for, b) ask the right questions and c) consider paying for a compression test.

If all checks out you could nab a bargain.

They are cheap as no-one is buying them! If you've had one for sale for months you will want rid of it at any price. The price advertised rarely has any correlation to their condition, more often how much of loan someone needs to pay off. Just beacause its cheap does not automtically make it a duffer.
