If I was to dive in and do the sleeving mod myself, what is needed for re-welding the box? Given it's stainless of some grade, does it need to be welded using (say) stainless wire in a MIG set or stainless rods if oxy? Also, where do peeps source the sleeves (or tube of the right grade and dia)? Thanks and apols if already dealt with previously.

If it's stainless then its either TIG or MIG you require. MIG (Metal Inert Gas) has a consumable electrode that runs through the handset.

TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) uses a non-consumable electrode (Tungsten) and a filler rod is dipped into the molten pool to create the weld.

Hope this helps.

If its a standard exhaust the box will actually be mild steel, in which case normal MIG wire will do the trick, as for the tube I'd try Yellow pages for a local fabricator to get an off cut failing that a stock, I can't remember the Dia' but I'd suggest you crawl under the car and measure it, you then want ERW with a 1.2 or 1.5mm wall thickness.

You should be able to source the tubes for the sleeves from a sheet metal supplier. They need to be about 500mm long and about 50-52mm diameter. Measure the pipes as they exit the box to double check. I cut the box open in a 'H' shape and peeled the two sides back, whilst leaving the box attached to the mounting plate. Then carefully removed the two perforated tubes with a hammer and cold chisel. They squash down quite easily, then MIG weld the two new sleeves back in their place. Then MIG the box back together. All it cost me was a fiver for the two bits of pipe and the noise is just superb!!

Hmmm...thanks for the replies guys. Has anyone tried just sleeving one of the perforated tubes? Occurs to me this should be a bit less 'intrusive' than the full mod (for more sensitive souls )?

Pupp,

Would not advise you to do that one, do both pipes for the full effect!!!

MIG requires stainless wire and Argon gas to do a proper job. Or you could bodge it and use mild steel wire and CO2...
