I have noticed on a couple occasions over the last month or too, an odd rumble or resonance whist driving the forester (its a 2litre non turbo) It only lasted for a minute or so, and was in a similar situation each time. I was traveling as about50, on a winding uphill A road (not the same one!) just about to change down to keep up momentum as the incline steepened a little. There didn't seem to be any road surface issues

A loud rumble or roar would be the best way to describe it, but it stopped both times as I changed down and the revs rose again. The first time it happened, I thought perhaps the exhaust was on its way out, but a visual check (by me ) didn't show any defect, no rattles or anything.

Any other explanations? - I have read about forester rear wheel bearing issues, But surely this would be a permanent rumble wouldn't it?

Wheel bearing will defo be a more permanent rumble.

But the description is a little vague. Is it engine, drivetrain ? Where does it sound like it's coming from ?

Definitely the rear, possibly left side.

its difficult to describe a noise, but its quite a deep rumbly/resonance kind of thing as opposed to a squeal/squeak. There is no significant vibration with it, and I haven't been able to provoke the noise this week despite my best efforts. The car drives normally.

I currently have 1200 miles left before the warranty that came with the car (only had it since November) so I might pop it into the shop for a service and they can check it over, hopefully if there is an issue it will be covered!

I have the same model of Forester and have get a similar noise and at the moment have put it down to the rear exhaust silencer. It seems worse when I coast down a hill and take my foot off the accelerator but when I press the accelerator the noise goes.

I'd be interested to hear what diagnosis the garage/mechanic gives?
